TOPIC: ARGUMENT169 - The following appeared in a letter from a department chairperson to the president of Pierce University.

"Some studies conducted by Bronston College, which is also located in a small town, reveal that both male and female professors are happier living in small towns when their spouses are also employed in the same geographic area. Therefore, in the interest of attracting the most gifted teachers and researchers to our faculty and improving the morale of our entire staff, we at Pierce University should offer employment to the spouse of each new faculty member we hire. Although we cannot expect all offers to be accepted or to be viewed as an ideal job offer, the money invested in this effort will clearly be well spent because, if their spouses have a chance of employment, new professors will be more likely to accept our offers."

Merely based on the unfounded assumption, the arguer draws the conclusion that new professors are willing to teach in the Pierce University if we offer jobs to their spouse. To support this conclusion, the author points out the study result in Bronston College. At first glance, this argument appears somewhat convincing, but further reflection rebeals that it omits some substantial concerns that should be addressed.

First and foremost, the survey results are not reliable to guage the residential livings of the professors. Since the author did not show us any statistics about the selective sample and the whether it was randomly across the entire spectrum. The selective sample cannot ensure representative for it was conducted only in a small town and just within Bronston College. This fact tells very little about what actual conditions the professors often consider as important when they choose where to work, and the survey's result have to be based on a reasonable investigate and statistics.

Secondly, the author falsely assumed that no factors other than the job offered to the spouses can drive the professors to make the decision. However, common scene informed me that a myriad of other factors might exit. For example, the location,  the weather and climate conditions to this area, the courses the professor will teach and the faculty staff the professor is going to working with have to be take in to consideration. And the most important reason for a professor to choose a working place, in my point of view, might rely on the searching and experimenting condition that a university offered to him or her, such as library facilities, and research founding. So, the author fails to consider other factors that maybe influence the professor's decision.

Last but not least, we can figure from this letter that the Pierce University is under a low morale staff condition and is calling for  higher qualified professors, so the chairperson is willing to invest money to offer jobs to the newly professor's spouses. However, it is entirely possible that we can figure this problem through other measures. Several shifting on the management will certainly solve the problem. In addition, we can held activities and competitions as a spur to encourage the faculty to make progress. However, if these problems remain existing, offering employment to the spouses would be ineffective under the purpose to attracting more new professors. And in contrast, even assuming the new professors are willing to teach in the Pierce University, the quality of staff will not be improved unless these problems are solved.

To sum up, the author cannot substantiate the claim about whether the new professor will work at Pierce university if their spouses can have jobs in this area, because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lend strong support to what the author maintains. To make this argument more convincing, the author would have to provide more information on the survey conducted, and more detailed statement on the faculty condition in Pierce University. If the argument had include these information, it will be more convincing.
