Issue18:
“Only by being forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that idea.”
                                         
The speaker claims that if we wanted to discover the value of an idea we should object others’ ideas and doubts. Only through this course can we have a further understand on that idea. However, after scrutiny several times I disagree with what the speaker concludes. Whether we can find the value of an idea does not depend on whether we are forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting others’ views, but depends on whether we are adopting a correct attitude to face agreement and disagreement. To support my views I will give reasons in aspects.

To begin with, rational skepticism can administer to the discovery of an idea’s value. Most of us are not smartest people that sometimes we cannot think of an issue from soup to nuts. Other persons’ doubt and disagreements can lead us to survey the problem twice. If we were right, to answer others’ doubt can strengthen our view; the other way around, if we were wrong, after a rational argument we still can understand the issue further by knowing why we make mistakes and correct the wrong point.

However, paranoiac does nothing helpful to find the truth. If we over believed in our view and cannot listen to others’ idea even when we know we are wrong, what the speaker claims cannot lead us to find the value of the idea. Actually, just thinking about the argument between two paranoiacs we will always see that though they both try their best to defend the standpoint which they represent for, the debate become a quarrel and we learn nothing except for meaningless rhetorical skills and shouting bouts.

Even we can discover the value of the idea without disagreements and doubts. Sometimes others backs our idea may consider in different aspects to support the idea. After communication with others, knowing the different opinions can give us new perspectives to look into the idea which can also help us understand the idea roundly. Of course, if we didn’t adopt a right attitude that we wanted to get know of the essential of the issue, the agreement can lead us to self-complacence and we cannot discover the value of the idea either.

To sum up, a right attitude can contribute to help us know the true meaning of an idea no matter we are forced to defend the idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others or not. The key point is not what the speaker claims but a curious heart.
