TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
How to raise children to help bring about a better society? The speaker thinks that the socialization of the youth is of vital importance to the destiny of society. I agree insofar as how children are socilized will strongly affect the behavious when they grow up, and thus have a great influence to the society as a whole. However, there are other affairs like gaining knowledge, training critical thinking, that should be taken into consideration when raising a child; otherwise, the method we take to cultivate our offspring might defeat its own purposes of making the world better in the long term.
Admittedly, a favorable process of socialization of juvenile would be beneficial for them to becoming reasonably informed, productive members of society. First of all, the youth will develop the knowledge and ability of communcation, which is helpful when they step into the society. What's more, they will well handle the complex relationship among different people, and know how to survive under such circumstance. More importantly, by contacting to people outside the school constantly, they will gain an understanding of the values and ethics which the society uphold, and obey the social rules without consideration. Indeed, they are the foundation upon which the society can operate smoothly.
However, if we overrate the impotance of socialization, the method we raise children would pose certain problems, which might outweigh the benefits. Primarily, knowledge and skills related to the exploration of nature might be neglected and never tought, in that those knowledges have nothing to do with personal adpatation to the society. As we know, the innovationes of new technology are rooted in the breakthough of science. By emphasize more on socialization, the young generation might lose interests in exploring the nature, this senario not only have no benefit to the progress of society, virtually it is a big disarster.
Secondly, subjects related to one's thought and feelings like philosophy and literature will not be encourged to learn. As an old proverb puts it, " the most important function of education at any level is to develop the personality of the individual and the significance of his life to himself and to others. " while it is necessary for a person to know how to cooperate with others and how to adapt to society, it is also important to learn how to find meanings in this world, how to deal with oneself, and how to make most use of one's potential, those are the things that cannot be learned only by socialization.
In the final analysis, over-evaluation on one's socialization when raising him up would amout to a double-edged sword. While it serves as an insurance to produce specialists who are useful to the society, at the same time it might serve to erode the foundation stone of innovation and culture. The optimal educating approach, in my view, is a balance between the emphasizing on socialization and the adoption of libral art education. |
