ISSUE13:Many of the world’s lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct.
There exist many other languages we do not know in the world except English, French, Chinese, and etc because a few people speak them. The speaker claims that many of the world’s lesser-known languages are being lost. I concur with this assertion, and believe that the governments of countries in which these languages are used should prevent them from turning vanished if the governments have the ability to do so.
Languages have the function to pass down a country or a nation’s history, culture and spirit. Many history issues, traditional customs, and spirit have been passed by languages at first before literal came out. Yu fighting the flood, for instance in history, is a piece of history about a person named Yu how to deal with the Yellow River in China. One example in customs is Thanksgiving Day. There is no detail literal record to illustrate where the festival originated from, but a story handed down by people in order to appreciate help from others which finally becomes a culture in America. A legend about a person wanted to remove a mountain shows the spirit of perseverance. With the issues and stories broadcast by languages, the history, culture, and spirit become more integrity, and have been the treasure of a nation. On the other hand, if the languages are not preserved, they will be lost in the end. For example, Mayan languages, from a language family spoken in northern Central America, have descended due to not being protected well. Hence, if a country has the ability to preserve the lesser-known languages, the human being will has more wealth.
However, to some government of countries, they should focus on other urgent issues which are more important than protecting languages, such as politics, economics. If a country lives in a chaos and mass condition, then it will have no energy to take care of languages’ problem, but rather to pay attention to how to keep the society stable, make people live in an abundant life, and develop the country. These issues may come first and urgent to the government. Otherwise, investing money to languages’ preservation, perhaps the country will extinct. In a word, in this situation, a government should pay more attention to more serious problems rather than languages.
Based on what have discussed above, we can know that whether a government need to take measurements to prevent lesser-known languages from becoming extinct depends on its own situation. If a government has the ability to do this, then the authority should try best to preserve these languages for they are the wealth of human being. Or the official should focus on other more urgent issues.
It is a fact that many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost for the reason that fewer and fewer people speak them. When it comes to the discussion about whether the government should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct or not, according to my observation, I think the government should do something in protecting these languages and it has already done so in fact since languages play a significant role in our society. However, we should also keep in mind that the extinction of languages does not just depend on whether there is a government funding or not.
In the first place, languages play an important role in keeping the integrity of our culture and ourselves as well. As the main carrier of our culture, languages keep and convey our history from our ancestors to us generation by generation. From the letters written on a paper to the folks or even to the body languages, all of which are different styles of languages, are formed, developed and passed down in our history, so we can understand a history of a society more comprehensively with the use of its own language. What's more, it is the language that upon which we depend to distinguish ourselves from others with different cultures. Without languages, we would lose the sense of pride, dignity and self-worth easily. It is also the reason why Japan forced the people in the northeast of China to learn Japanese during the World War Two. In short, languages are an important part of the culture of society and the government needs to protect the diminishing languages in order to keep the integrity of the society.
In the second place, after realizing the crucial role that the languages play, the government has already devote some resources to protect the languages which are becoming extinct. On the one hand, the government encourages the minority people of the country who use the indigenous languages to keep on using them. In China, you can see in Tibet and Xijiang that the the(删掉) schools for the minority students are teaching with two languages, their own language and the Chinese. On the other hand, the government also spends some money in researching those languages. The money is used to collect the materials of the languages, research those languages and propagate them. From this point of view, the government does not want to lose any kind of its languages since they are the treasure of its society and has acted to protect them.
In the last analysis, we need not to be astonished that there are still some languages extinct even though with the help of the government for the reason that it is the need of the development of our society that makes this situation. Over the span of history, it is easy for us to find that we are throwing the old things and developing new things all the time, so do the language. We changed from bicycles to cars; we changed from letters to emails; we changed from a feudal society to a democratic society; all of which are for a better life. (这几句话感觉跟论点没什么关系)So when it comes to the language, people will choose the same criteria to determine whether they would keep on using the language if the adverse effects brought about the language barriers overweigh the benefits it can produce. In a word, it is natural that a language would be discarded by people with the development of the society.
To sum up, language is important for a society, and it is the government's work to protect a language that is becoming extinct. However, though with the government's help, some languages would still be abandoned by people for a better life.
