Leaders are the most essential part for success in any field. But should the leader keep that position for a very long time? And if not, what is the suitable tour of duty?And I hold that it is necessary to revitalization through new leadership in any profession within a suitable period, yet whether this way is the surest one need a case - by - case analysis.
Nobody can always make precisely analyses and wisely decisions, especially the leaders who are involved in a position full of entices and infinite power. Admittedly, experiences of a certain field are important, but a long-term leader has been receiving success, fame, wealth, and respects which can change a wise and cool-minded leader to be stubborn and persist in wisely, doing everything regardless of others opinions. Even more serious, in political and economy, autocracy, despotism and tyranny might follow. Stalin, the supreme ruler with extensive self-confidence in Soviet Union for a quarter of a century, whose powerful regime of terror in industry and agriculture achieve huge productivity in Soviet but at great cost of death and suffering. Not to mention Mussolini's twenty years' autocracy in Italy drift his people and country in to war. So a long-term leadership meaning sufficient time and power for a leader to misuse his authority.
At this time, a competitive mechanism to ensure a periodic change in leadership is meaningful and effective. On one hand, the refreshing of the blood can provide the team with newly and more constructive ideas, and changing the rigid management. More important, this competitive and crisis awareness could ensure the leader avoiding autocracy and despotism, thus guarantee the operating under a healthy and developing process. Gorge Washington set an example for world wide leaders by delegated the authority of president of America to the succession peacefully and voluntary, which is followed by many all the presidents in the American history.So he was remembered not only for the liberation and establishment of America, but also a mechanism of a democratic country.
Of course, the choice of the changing period is significant, and a five-year period had already been introduced in many realms, which is not merely a follow suit, but a rather proper tenure for a group to develop and prosperous. In most countries, the leader serves for five years; for a company's primary leader, as an chief executive officer, a five - year changing plan may provide the organization with energy. If the period for a leading position is too long, many problems such as autocracy and self-stubborn will occur. Whereas the period is too short, then the leader might not have enough experiences to managing well, and a easily changing and shifting will arouse instability. In a word, five years is a much more proper tenure that ensure a balancing between fresh power and previous leading.
From the analysis made above, I hold that a competitive mechanism is necessary for the change of leading position in any profession to ensure a balance between newly ideology and the old structure, and five years neither too long nor too short for this changing plan. Autocracy should be avoid, and new concepts should be added, then making the enterprises, countries and other groups develop with vitality and harmony. |
