ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

When it comes to who plays an more consequential role in creating history, the author claims that, in stead of the famous few, the important events and tends in the past were made by the people who have long been forgotten. To some extent, it is true that people is essential to the progress of society and we should pay more attention to people when studye history, but it is not to say that individual are of no significance. To make an inclusive conclusion, we should realize that not only people and individul ,but also some other factors are all fundamental elements in history.

Admittedly, there is undoutedly a great deal of truth in the author's statement that the people has a prominent influence on the development and trendency of history. Herbert Aptheker, an American historian, said to us," It is the masses endure, how they resist, how they sruggle, that forms the body of true history." Without large groups of workers toiled for years, the Great Wall could not have been built; without numerous citizens fought for equality, the women's movement could not success; without myriad people sacrificed their life in the Civil War, the slavery could not be ended in American. Only from the people could we get the momentous power that make our society become more prosperous and lead to the progress of history.

Reasonable as the author's statement is, we cannot afford to ignore the fact that individuals also dominate the direction of history. More often than not, critical progresses are made by personages who are the few. For supperting examples, one need to focus on the area of science and art. By combining new or greatly expanded musical styles with his emotion, Beethoven reinvented the music of the West and built a bridge between classical music and romantic music. And Einstein, with his brilliant theoretical work, single-handedly revoluntionized physics and opened up many new branches in scientific resesrch. With their extraordinary intelligence or outstanding leadership, the individuals are the forerrunners of historical tends and the directors of great events.

Making this issue a comprehensive and systematical one requires us to recognize that, apart from what has just discussed, other factors also contribute to the progress of history. For example, the economic, societal, environmental, technological elements are significant to historical change. Nowadays, the huge prosperity of society is due to neither any individual nor group of people, however, it is the result of advanced technology and efficient economic system. Leaders from different countries negociate on the internet, discuss the peace of the world and try to avoid misunderstanding between each other. Surgery is performed by computer, with patient in one city and the doctor in another city thousands of miles away. Amazing things like that are happening every where, and the development of technology is revoluntionizing our life and the history at the same time.

After analyzing several reasons above, I hope it helps to explain the notion that the driving force behind the development of history is an organic component of the people, individuals, technology and so forth. All these elements are invested with the task of conveying the lessons for history. By paying attention to each of them we could attain eternal values for human life and shed light on the present.

TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
WORDS: 524          TIME: 1:09:53          DATE: 2010-2-23(写完后已自己修改)

The author of the statement emphasizes the improtance of skepticism, and claims that students should challenge the knowledge on the textbook instead of accepting passively. To some extent, it is true that skepticism exerts significant effect in the development of every aspect of human life, however, to make an inclusive conclusion, we should realize that what provides impetus of advancement of our lives is the ability of thinking and solving problems rather than just questioning.

Admittedly, there is a great deal of truth in the statement that certain skepticism boosts the development of science, art, and so forth. If we were to accept blindly to what we are taught, scientific inventions and discoveries would not have been made; equality and freedom of women and minor races would not have been achieved; and the variety styles of modern art would not have been realized. To underscore my point, several apt illutrations are involved. By questioning why there was an extremly minor discrepency between the density of supposed pure nitrogen, prepared from air, and actually pure nitrogen, prepared from ammonium nitrate, William Ramsay and Strutt Rayleigh discovered Argon, a new chemical element. By challenging the classical theory thought that energy is continuous, Max Plank pointed that energy should travel discretely, which is the very foudation of myriad modern physics advancement. If we take it for granted that all the theories are correct and verified, we would never discover or invent new things, and the development of humanity and science would remain stagnant.

Granted that the skepticism plays a consequential role in the development of  humanity and science, we should recognize that undue questions on our knowledge could have an debasing effect on our learning. Demonstrated by numerous experiments and theoretical researches, most of the knowledges on the textbook is correct and true. If we have a lot of unnecessary questions about every details in what we are taught, we will risk squandering our limited time in a loosing battle which otherwise might have gone a long way toward learning more usefull knewledge, developing practical skills or even relaxing and talking with friends. And more often than not, the skeptic who doubts everything probably is considered to be synical, and could not manage social affairs perfectly. As a matter of fact, What really counts in the author's statement is the spirit of questioning and thinking independently, not a fastidious attitude toward every details in the textbook.

Making this issue a systematical and reasonable one requires us to reveal the essence of the author's suggestion. The ability of thinking and solving problems independently rather than the knack of asking and challenging is the very point of achieving success. In fact, evryone could ask a lot of childish questons in the class.  But what distincts the great masterhead from the mediocre is the insight of problems. Only when one devotes herself or himself into the contemplating of the problem and working on it for a long time, could she or he discover something unusual. Without doing numorous experiments Ramsay and Rayleigh would not bave discovered Argon, without laborious mathematical and physical work, Plank would not have established the quantum theory.

After analyzing all the aspects about the issue, I hope it helps to clasify that the skepticism is an important elements in learning and studying, however, to achieve the ultimate goal of advancing our knowledge and better our life, we should emphasize on the ability of reflecing and elucidating rather than questioning.

WORDS: 524          TIME: 1:09:53          DATE: 2010-2-23(写完后已自己修改)

The author of the statement emphasizes the improtance of skepticism, and claims that students should challenge the knowledge on the textbook(what they are taught 不一定局限与书本知识把,有时权威的经验也能左右人的,作者这里把范围给缩小化了..) instead of accepting them (那是个及物动词)passively. To some extent, it is true that skepticism exerts significant effect in/on the development of every aspect of human life,;(however这样用的话,前面是分号; 请注意) however, to make an inclusive conclusion, we should realize that what provides impetus of advancement of our lives is the ability of thinking and solving problems rather than just questioning.(个人意见,这里是inclusive conclusion, 那么inclusive到底值得是那些个方面?从题目来看,首先需要包括quest,然后作者再谈论其他...不是和用rather than,这个用法强调的是前者,这样的话和你的开头句就不协调)

Admittedly, there is a great deal of truth/numerous truths(不管是真理还是事实都是是可数的) in the statement that certain skepticism boosts the development of science, art, and so forth.(题目明显没有包含作者所指的这些方面,这些方面是作者自己的推理结果......) If we were to accept blindly to(删) what we are taught, scientific inventions and discoveries would not have been made; equality and freedom of women and minor races would not have been achieved; and the variety styles of modern art would not have been realized. To underscore my point, several apt illutrations are involved. By questioning why there was an extremly minor discrepency between the density of supposed pure nitrogen, prepared from air, and actually pure nitrogen, prepared from ammonium nitrate, William Ramsay and Strutt Rayleigh discovered Argon, a new chemical element.(例子的叙述很好的证明了你的论点:quest的重要性!不错) By challenging the classical theory thought that energy is continuous, Max Plank pointed out that energy should travel discretely, which is the very foudation of myriad modern physics advancement. If/(Supposing that) we take/(those great scientists took)(你的例子是发生在过去的,并且是科学家,而不是我们,你的例子知识用来证明你的论点的,不要随便用we,因为例子讲的不是we!,你只需将例子可以证明你论点的部分提出即可), it for granted that all the theories are/were correct and verified, we/human beings would never(这个就不恰当了,除了质疑,科学发现还有相当一部分是源于偶然发现) discover or invent new things, and the development of humanity and science would remain stagnant.

Granted that the skepticism plays a consequential role in the development of  humanity and science, we should recognize that undue questions on/about our knowledge could have an debasing effect on our learning. Demonstrated by numerous experiments and theoretical researches, most of the knowledges(不可数) on the textbook(不要限定知识就非得在书本上,很容易会被ARG) is correct and true. If we have a lot of unnecessary questions about every details in what we are taught, we will run the risk of squandering our limited time in a loosing battle which otherwise might have gone a long way towards learning more usefull knewledge/knowledge, such as developing practical skills or even relaxing and talking with friends.(这个例子就不爽了,闲谈是有用的事?从大众的思维方式和多数情形来考虑) And more often than not, the skeptic who doubts everything probably is considered to be synical, and could not manage social affairs perfectly. As a matter of fact, What really counts in the author's statement is the spirit of questioning and thinking independently, not a fastidious attitude toward every details in the textbook.

Making this issue a systematical and reasonable one requires/require us to reveal the essence of the author's suggestion. The ability of thinking and solving problems independently rather than the knack of asking and challenging(思考和解决问题的能力就一定能成功?这里还否定了quest的价值那么你前面的论述是干什么的?第二段那么长都用来论证quest的重要性,结果这里半句就给否了...,前后矛盾,务必小心!请仔细体会 is the very point of achieving success. In fact, evryone could ask a lot of childish questons in the class,  But/whereas (这两句联系紧密,应合起来)what distincts/distinguish the great masterhead from the mediocre is the insight of problems. Only when one devotes herself or himself(用法很正确!) into the contemplating of the problem and working on it for a long time, could she or he discover something unusual. Without doing numorous experiments Ramsay and Rayleigh would not bave discovered Argon, without laborious mathematical and physical work, Plank would not have established the quantum theory.(这个结论同样有问题...)

After analyzing all the aspects about the issue, I hope it helps/have managed (不是你希望...,这么说难道你暗指其实你已经把问题讲的很明白,就看ETS有没有本事把你的文章看明白了?......)to clasify that the skepticism is an important elements in learning and studying, however, to achieve the ultimate goal of advancing our knowledge and better our life, we should emphasize on the ability of reflecing and elucidating rather than questioning.

Admittedly, there is undoutedly a great deal of truth in the author's statement that the people has a prominent influence on the development and trendency of history. (第一句扣题不太好,
应该修饰一下people ,扣住people whose identities have long been forgotten.
Herbert Aptheker, an American historian, said to us," It is the masses endure, how they resist, how they struggle, that forms the body of true history." Without large groups of workers toiled for years, the Great Wall could not have been built; without numerous citizens fought for equality, the women's movement could not success; without myriad people sacrificed their life in the Civil War, the slavery could not be ended in American. Only from the people could we get the momentous power that make our society become more prosperous and lead to the progress of history.(这一段列举的几个例子不错)

爱因斯坦可是雷区啊~!)

可以再构思一下)
