argument 19
The following appeared in a letter from the manager of a rock band named Double Rice.
"One year ago, tickets for Double Rice's concerts in stadiums around the country took, on average, at least 24 hours to sell out, if they sold out at all. But the band has been enjoying a surge in nationwide popularity among 14 to 25 year olds, and the 30,000 tickets for a recent concert in Megalopolis sold out in 12 minutes. Clearly the ticket sales in Megalopolis are a result both of the band's increased popularity and of the advertising campaign run in Megalopolis by the Ad Lib advertising agency. Thus, in order to ensure that the band's success in Megalopolis is repeated across the country, the band should hire Ad Lib to duplicate the Megalopolis ad campaign on a nationwide scale."

In the argument, based on several reasons, the arguer comes to the conclusion that in order toensure future success of Double Rice's success, the band should hire As Lib toduplicate the Megalopolis ad campaign on a nationwide scale. To support hisassertion, he points out that Double Rice is enjoying a surge in nationwidepopularity among 14 to 25 years old and the ticket for concert sells out morequickly than ever before. In addition, he claims that the sales in Megalopolisare a result both of the band's increased popularity and Ad Lib, which runs theadvertising campaign in Megalopolis. However, this argument is not convincingdue to several falsest.
In the first place, the arguer makes a cause-effect fallacy. The faster sales speed oftickets is not necessarily due to an increasing population. In fact, it isentirely possible that total amount of concert ticket in Megalopolis is smallerthan the previous ones, (YES) thus it could be sold out more quickly. Since theauthor fails to make a convincing comparison between the sales in Megalopoliswith the former ones, he could not rashly reach the conclusion that Double Riceenjoys an increasing popularity.(GOOD)
In the secondplace, even if Double Rice's concert ticket do sells more quickly (you already make a conceesion so the point “quck” which has already been used in first paragraph should not appear here) inMegalopolis, he couldn't claims that it was caused by Ad Lib. He hasn't excluded other possible causes, such as the local people are relatively richercompared with other district, or for the first time, concert tickets are alsosold online for the first time, which enables fans to purchase tickets moreeasily and quickly. Consequently, it is unwarranted to assume that the Ad Lib’sadvertisement has any contribution in the faster sales speed.( to the sells of the ticket)
In the thirdplace, the arguer makes a false analogy. Even Ad Lib's advertisement really worksand impetus the sale of ticket in Megalopolis, it does not necessary ensuresthe ticket will be sold well nationwide. In other words, it is possible that, while Megalopolis residents responds good to the advertisement runs by Ad Lib,the nationwide consumers show no interest in such style of advertisement. What’s more, Ad Lib maybe a local company. That is to say, it understands thetaste and interest of local residents. Nevertheless, when it comes to anationwide scale, Ad Lib has no advantage compared with those nationwideadvertisement companies. Thus, this conclusion is inconvincible either.
To conclude, this argument is not persuasive as it stands. Before we accept the conclusion, the arguer must present more facts that Double Rice due receives an increasingpopulation nationwide and Ad Lib’s advertisement really works. To solidify theargument, the arguer would have to produce more evidence that Ad Lib’sadvertisement will be welcomed by the nationwide customers.
