TOPIC: ISSUE28 -"Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas,trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learnedonly facts have learned very little."


The issue in factconsists of two relevant statements: one is that 'students should memorizefacts only after they have studied the ideas trends and concepts' and the otherone is that those who only learn facts have learned very little. While I am infavor of the second statement, I strongly doubt the authenticity of the firstone.


Admittedly, factsalone without academic concepts that build up inner connection among them andprovide convincing explanation are bootless as they are irrelevant to eachother. Take one country, China, which has a relatively long history of 5000years as it has for instance. It had discovered incredibly accurate and validfacts that the westerners attained hundreds of years later such as the use ofgunpowder. Yet without established theories of chemistry and mechanics, gunpowderstayed an ingredient for fireworks and served only for entertainment forhundreds years in China until the Europeans successfully put it into militaryuse and began the industry era. Thus, students who have learned only facts haveacquired little in most cases if no corresponding ideas have been transferred.


Nevertheless, tohastily draw the conclusion that concepts ought to go before facts isirrational. Consider not the cross-study of facts and ideas help furtherunderstand each other, the path in which antecedents struggled out of seeminglyseparate facts to grasp the light of truth allows no splitting facts andtheories during the study process. As widely acknowledged, the ultimate goal ofstudy is not understand what has been explained, but to explore the unknow andto innovate, which requires the course of research, that is, to find out theinner association among assorted and numerous facts and to make hypothesis thatcorrectly explains the connection. If no such procedure presented in theexperience of study, students can hardly make remarkable achievements in theirlifetime for the reason that they have been accustomed to accept set upexplanations rather than discover them by themselves.


Also, whileappropriately combining the study of facts and trends, one need to realize thatthe so-called facts are no more than phenomena observed by modern apparatus,which are limited by the methods and accuracy of machines, contributing to apossibility that the facts we obtained from experiments are not truly facts,but the facial expression of further problems. The argument of the nature oflight in history can best clarify it. Issac Newton holds the position thatlight is some kind of particles while Huygens insists light is wave. Because ofthe lack of coherent light source-lasers, people at that time failed to observethe interference and diffration effects of light, which convinced them thecorrectness of the particle theory. It was not until Thomas Young’s experimentof ingenuity that showed the crossed fringes resulted from interference effectdid people realize that the real fact is that light is a kind of wave ofspecific frequency.


To sum up, bothfacts and ideas, trends, concepts are crucial and cannot be omitted at any timeduring the study periods. Facts should go along with theories, which is theonly way that ensures students truly experience the process of discovery andremain able to make any innovative accomplishments.



第一次写整篇的,有很多问题
1。比如这道题目其实是有2点:先学理论,后记事实;只学事实所得有限  写的时候需要两者都照顾到吗?或者可以只写一点,还是另一点要稍微带一带?
2。从上面的问题引出的,比如题目是 因为A所以我们要B,那么文章能否不去说B不B,而完全讨论A本身?
3。例子究竟应该大篇幅地说透还是简略地写,多举些例子?
4。一般理想情况应该有几个中间段,分几层来写?

The issue in fact consists of two relevant statements: one is that 'students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas trends and concepts' and the other one is that those who only learn facts have learned very little. While I am in favor of the second statement, I strongly doubt the authenticity of the first one.(作为一个引领你全文的topic sentence来说。这句话没有力度。甚至可以说很薄弱。而且对于两个statement其实不应该只是简单的同意第几个。比如,第一个statement,是否有道理?在某些情况下它是成立的?还有没有其它的情况?对于第二个它的武断结论就可以相对简单地讨论,甚至我觉得可以结合在对第一个statement的讨论中,这也许是你提出的第一个问题的结局方法之一,但仅为个人意见。)

(你的意思是gunpowder为后期的military提供理论基础?如果不是彼此之间的联系,还只是停留在制作fireworks的程度上?这个例子用在理论的前后联系上是好的,但我觉得应该结合claim里说的学生在记忆历史事件是在学习理论基础上说法的联系。)

把后来的问题补上~
开头那样写是因为看到一篇北美范文就是直接说题目其实是3个问题然后BLABLABLA的
1。然后比如这个题目还可以说学得多少方法只是辅助,个人才是关键,但是这个就和facts go along with ideas...有点矛盾了,如果要写的话topic sentence要如何改才能把两者结合起来呢?
2。concept不能代替ideas,trends,concepts那么每次出现都一定要写这么一长串嘛?
3。AWINTRO里只说了要从多角度看问题,但并没有说能否只讨论问题的一部分啊。。。
4。写的时候刻意把句子加长了,看的时候有觉得很别扭吗?要不要稍微写短点?
5。草木版主的effective writing是指“George Orwell’s 5 Rules for Effective Writing”吗?没有说到结尾呀。。。

不好意思,现在才来回复。
1,你应该整体把握一下到底大方向怎么走,就你的问题感觉好像是后期不断加进去的想法。TS怎么写~这个怎么回答呢...囧。
2,concept只是其中之一,找个概括得了的。理论学习嘛...
3,再看看...体会下,会明白的。
4,长的不必要的是累赘。长短结合是很多大家的建议,我转达他们的意...
5,有的。我们组都学习过的。==给你找。
