TOPIC: ARGUMENT35 - The following appeared in the summary of a study on headaches suffered by the residents of Mentia.

"Salicylates are members of the same chemical family as aspirin, a medicine used to treat headaches. Although many foods are naturally rich in salicylates, for the past several decades food-processing companies have also been adding salicylates to foods as preservatives. This rise in the commercial use of salicylates has been found to correlate with a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants in our twenty-year study. Recently, food-processing companies have found that salicylates can also be used as flavor additives for foods. With this new use for salicylates, we can expect a continued steady decline in the number of headaches suffered by the average citizen of Mentia."

In this argument, the author states that we could expect a continued steady decline in the number of headaches suffered by the average citizen of Mentia because the Salicylates(S), a medicine used to treat headaches, has been added to foods as preservatives by the food-processing companies and also used as flavor additives for food recently. Additionally, the rise in the commercial use of S has been found to correlate with a steady decline in the average number of headaches reported by participants in our twenty-year study. However, the argument is based on the unsubstantiated assumption and reasons and should be rejected.

In the first place, the author fails to validate that whether the customer could have the ability of digesting and accepting the chemical. It is possible that without the help of any other food, the human being could not get S easily due to the fact that many food are naturally rich in S. So there is no support of the thought that whether the destination of adding the S to food could come true.

Secondly, even assuming more and more individuals have eaten the food which contains the chemical S, we cannot deny the other possible alternatives that are contributive to the decline in the number of headache. Such alternatives include the habits of people' lifestyle, and functional cure in the hospital. Without more persuasive information, there is no support of the cause-and-effect relationship between the increase in the S to the food and the decrease in the number of patients with headache.

Finally, even assuming due to the S as preservatives and flavor additives in the food, it is also entirely possible that the number of people' suffering headache would be unchanged or even enhanced because the wrong deed such as excessive sports damages the head or perhaps with the
growing population of the city, the patients would be developed relatively.

To sum up, the author should provide more meaningful and useful proof to justify the S could be utilized by humankind. What's more, a specific content to show the real correlation between the two numbers should be showed.
