题目:ISSUE28 - "Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."
When I was a pupil, I knew the language called English for the first time. Every time the teacher who taught English required us to remember words, I couldn't do it unless I learned about the pronunciation, the explanation and the usage of a word. Since then, I have acquired a habit of memorizing facts through the method of learning the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Therefore, in my viewpoint, it is a pratical method of memorizing facts, that one can learn those that help explain those facts, such as the ideas, trends and concepts, as the speaker asserts.
First of all, the essential process of study for a student is to recognize, to learn, to delve and finally to apply what one have mastered completely. Moreover, the precondition for using what one have learned, is to understand them fully and clearly. It is an effective way to studying the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts, which accelerate memorizing. On the contrary, to learn only facts is merely to catch something of futile doctrine. For example, what one learns through rote learning would be forgotten bit by bit as time flies and one is ageing. It is important to memorize facts in the way of understanding.
Secondly, learning the relative ideas, trends, and concepts creat an important linkage to those facts, which makes it easy to memorize facts. As aptly illustrated by my own experience of memorizing English words, there created several linkage by my brain from the English word I would be memorizing to its pronunciation, its explanation and its usage. By this way, in the case of forgetting the spelling of a word, I could remember it through the linkages of the word. In a word, one create a proper linkage between the facts itself and the correlative explaination in one's brain, to help understand perfectly.
Thirdly, admittedly, the speaker's assertion that it is only after the study of the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts, that students should memorize facts, is quite absolute. It is likely that students can achieve the goal by other methods, such as, rote learning is the first step, then pratice makes perfect, finally the fact is a part of one's brain.
In summary, I agree that students should memorize facts through the way of studying their ideas, trends, and concepts at first to help explain those facts. If one have learned only the fact, the result is that one learns nothing expect the fact itself. |
