TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

To Being skeptical for a student is obviously beneficial for learning, for it not only develops one's understanding, but also helps one find his or her own way to find answers. But over skeptical might lead to little acceptance of knowledge that one should learn, resulting in less efficiency than others.

To begin with, keeping asking questions about what one should learn could contribute to a deeper understanding of knowledge. To teach in class is to transmit knowledge to students in the class, and that means frequently, not everyone can effectively understand what the teacher tries to teach. By asking specific questions, one could possess a chance not only to check whether he or she understand the information, but also to attain deeper and broader knowledge after finding out the truth. For instance, one may remember a formula easily for a short time; whereas one could learn the formula by heart for a considerably long period if he or she asks how it comes from and solves the problem. Therefore, it is being skeptical that helps a student learn more and deeper.

In addition, students also find their own approaches to solving various problems besides turning to teachers for help. Since teachers are not invariably available for one to question and it is equally important to seek for answers by oneself, skepticism would drive one to find other ways to get the answers. One would learn to google related information online when looking for some latest technologies; one could go to libraries, finding reference and recordings concerning about the history of the problem. It is also the ways one looking for solutions that help one obtain much more skills and information.

However, over skeptical to what one learn might lead to little acceptance of useful information and skills, which one needs to grasp in school. Simply put: how could one gain knowledge if he or she questions a large part of textbooks? How could one remember the key points in the courses if he or she spare no efforts to check whether they are indispensable? How could one use the formulas when he or she has not proven their correct? Too many questions remain to be answered, and too much time is taken to pursue this process. In the end, it only leads to low efficiency and little master of the subjects.

To conclude, moderate skepticism enables students to develop broader and deeper understanding about what they learn, and to improve their skills to find the answers, while over skepticism means less efficiency in learning and less knowledge gained than others.

(2) But, the point is not persuasive enough due to the logic and example
