ARGUMENT45
45The following appeared as an editorial in a wildlife journal.

"Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic region. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of a year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed, and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea."

Grounding on the decline in arctic deer populations found by hunters, and adding the two facts that migration habitat of deer to find food in areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed and the simultaneous melting of ice caused by recent global warming trends, the argument draws to a seemingly well grounded conclusion that the decline in arctic deer population results from deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea. However, there are 3 problems in the above analyze.

First of all, the decline, concluded from the number of deer hunters found, is not exactly what actually happened to the number of deer. The statistic evidences the hunters given merely shows how many deer they found in daily life. Although they live on hunting and spend most of their time in field, their conclusion can not be used as a valid consequence. To be more detailed, is the declining number of deer the only reason for the fewer findings? What about the changing of routines by which deer migrate? What about the number of deer that migrate in routines where hunters usually appear declines owing to the hunting? What's more, the declining should be noted by exact number to exclude the possibility that the phenomenon is based on the very few casual encounters. Further investigation is needed.

Besides, the connection between global warming and the changing migration patterns can't be demonstrated firmly. Global warming brings about numerous effects. Ice is more likely to melt in hotter situations. Nevertheless, there is no convincing evidence showing that the age-old migration patterns are influenced, or, in another words, the ice there are melting. If ice there is not melted at all, the deduction will be ridiculous. Ice of age-old migration patterns should be constantly detected until the answer is drawn clearly. There is still a long way to go.

Last but not least, even if the number of arctic deer is declining and global warming is to be blamed for that, some reasons other than disappearance of age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea are possible. The regular plants on which they feed grows well on the old environment. But as the temperature goes up, more plants can survive where there was so cold that only a few of plants can be found before. The environment changes greatly as a consequence of more intense competition between plants, and prevailing plants may change to some other plants that deer don't want to eat. The lacking of food can do the same to the number of deer as well. More complicated results are also likely to be led in. Those possibilities should not be put aside.

In a word, the argument will be sounder if all the 3 problems are solved by further experiment. By that time, the topic will be more clear.

[age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea---->global warming----->deer cannot across the frozen sea------>decline/decrease
Reports from local hunters are too vague. And no clear evidence to present causal relationship.
For deer decline may contribute to other reasons rather than cannot keep pattern. e.g. overhunt, food chain.
Even there is relation with disruption of pattern, it may result in other causes rather than global warming. e.g. gradually not warm enough to melt ice.]

This passage argues about the reduction of deer population in Canada's arctic region contributes to global warming for which cause a disruption with the deer's old-age migration pattern. However, scarcely based on some vague reports from local hunters, this argument is completely vulnerable. The reasons are as following.

First of all, there is no accurate evidence and convincing argument to present why deer cannot move over ice from island to island will inevitably cause population fall. Because the primary reason deer migrating is to search for food, it is possible that sufficient food supply will probably change deer's habits . Also, the reports from local hunters is quite suspicious for hunters do not have professional knowledge about research rendering them hard to know accurate deer population which spread among sporadic islands.

Even if the reports from hunters are not as vague as it seems, and even there is cause relationship between migration patterns and deer population. The reduction probably caused by other factors, which are not referred by the arguer. For example, local hunters may kill the deer
directly, and the overhunt activity necessarily decline deer number, which is likely to be the main cause of the number fall. And less food supply would to the highly extent make them die for starvation. Without ruling these [possibilities], we are granted to doubt the [explanation] provided by the arguer.

In addition, even the disruption of migration pattern entitled to have a serious impact on deer population, it seems ridiculous to blame for global warming. As we all know, global warming is a gradual [procedure], so it will take a long time that the temperature on Earth rises high enough to melt all the sea ice in Canada's arctic region where Arctic deer live. It is admittedly that global warming affect the ice caps around the world, but more researches should be done to prove that not only sea ice has totally melt for the change of climate,  but also no frozen ice occur from island to island, which provide accesses for the deer's movement. In conclusion, the argument above is speculative for weak logical relation and lacking evidence.

In is argument, the author firstly introduced arctic deer’s habit that the way they search for food and the area they habitat. Then the author cited local hunter’s reports that the deer’s populations are declining. At the same time the global warming make sea ice melt, so the author make a conclusion that deer’s decline is caused by sea ice melt. However, there has some illogical opinion led the argument confusing and inconvincible.
First of all, the author didn’t give any evidence to prove that the arctic deer can only live in the kind of areas assertand only live in the way the author assert. If the environment of the arctic deer’s habitat changed greatly they may change their live way or move to another area more suitable for them. The arctic deer also may have strong adaptability to adopt the environment’s changing meanwhile changing their appearance during the adoption, so that people can’t recognize them or judge them for another kind of deer. This phenomenon is very common in many kinds of animals for example the arctic fox will change their fur’s color when the weather changes.
What’s more, these reports coincide with recent global warming trends don’t equal to the sea ice in the area will melt. it is true that global warming can cause the sea ice to melt in global range but this area, the author assert, may be a exception for the its special climate or terrain.

Moreover, the reports of the local hunters’ can’t demonstrate the populations of the arctic deer are declining. As I mentioned above, the arctic deer may move to new place or change their appearance. And even if the deer’s populations are declining, it may not cause by sea ice’s melt but for other reasons, for example: environment pollution, hunters’ hunting or some their own reasons may led to the decline.

For the reasons I mentioned above, the author’s deduce of the argument is weak, and the final conclusion that being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea cause the decline of the arctic deer’s populations is irrational.

This argument concludes that the decline in arctic deer population is the result of recent global warming, which leads deer to be unable to migrate from island to island. However, close scrutiny of this argument reveals that the arguer provides little credible support for the conclusion.

To begin with, as indicated in the argument, the result that deer population is declining comes from local hunters, which is lack of necessary credible information or data. Maybe it is just an impression from the hunters’ hunting experience. The argument fails to indicate what portion of the deer surveyed actually considered by local hunters; the smaller this portion, the less reliable the result.

In addition, the arguer assumes that the ice of Canada's arctic region have melted inevitably due to the global warming trend. There is no reliable evidence about that the overall global trend can accurately predict a specific situation. Moreover, perhaps this warming trend is even the opposite in Canada's arctic region because of the particular geographic location. Unless providing the specific information of the climate in Canada's arctic region, the conclusion cannot convince me at all.

Even assuming that it indeed gets warmed in Canada's arctic region and there is indeed a reduction in arctic deer population, one cannot reasonably conclude that there is a firm causality between the decline in arctic deer population and the global warming trends just because they have a coincidence in time. There are many other possibilities which can cause the reduction. For example, the local hunters overhunt deer in recent time or a severe epidemic disease spread among the deer. Without accounting for all the reasons, I cannot be persuaded that the reduction of deer population is due to the global warming.

In the final analysis, the arguer fails to provide enough evidence and information to support that the global warming leads to the  melting of the ice of Canada's arctic region, which cause the decline in arctic deer population because the change of their migration pattern. Absent additional information about the above events, this argument is indefensible as it stands.

In this argument, the arguer concludes that the decline in arctic deer populations is owing to deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea. To substantiate the conclusion, the arguer cites the local hunters’ report which revealed the deer populations are declining. Moreover, the reports coincide with the recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt. At first glance, the conclusion mentioned above seems convincing, but after scrutinizing the argument, we may find it suffering several flaws for the following reasons.

To begin with, the reports came from the local hunters is insufficient to demonstrate that the arctic deer population is declining. The arguer did not provide any evidence that the deer population is actually decreasing. Maybe the hunters’ claim is merely based on the fact that the deer they hunt is decreasing. There are many other factors which can contribute to the fact that the number of deer they hunt is declining, such as the time they hunt, the realm they go, etc.

Secondarily, even though we admit that the deer population is declining, we can not reach the conclusion that the decreasing population is due to the global warming. What if the hunters used to overkill many young deer which lead to the decreased deer population; what if the lessened deer population is caused by some kind of unknown disease; what if the reduction of the deer population is ascribed to the invasion of its natural enemy. As a consequent, we can not draw the conclusion the decreasing population is due to the global warming.

What’s more, supposing we accept that the global warming do wield some effect on the reduction of the deer populations, we still can not come into the agreement that global warming is the reason why the deer populations declined. We can not rule out the possibility that the genuine reason behind all this is the human action. It is possible that as the progress in the exploration in the arctic region, people have more and more dabbled there. It is known that there is a kind of ship called ice-destructing ship, which can crash and mash the ice blocks wherever they navigate. When these ships entered into the area of the arctic beer’s living, the beer there will never have the integral ice piece to allow them to travel over and get their destinations to earn food.

In summary, the argument is unpersuasive as it stands. To strengthen the argument, the arguer should demonstrate that the number of the deer populations is actually changed, and the real reason which caused the change.

To soonyu:
In this argument, the author asserts that the declining population of arctic deer results from recent global warming. To support the conclusion, the author claims that arctic deer search for food by moving over ice so that their habitat is limited to a specific areas which are destroyed by global warming.(还有hunters’ report global warming trend呢?这两个才是主要证据)
The conclusion seems logical, however, it relies on a series
ofunjustifiable assumptionsand the conclusion is unsubstantiated.

First, there is not enough evidence of that the population of arctic deer is declining except the hunter's
(文中为hunters ,故这里最好用hunters’
words. It is possible that hunters thought that only because of their decreasing hunting results which perhaps result from their clumsy skills, increasing age or any other reason
s. Moreover, it probably attribute to the move of deer. We cannot establish relevance between decreasing hunting result and declining population of arctic deer.

Second, even if the population is really declining, we couldn't assert that they
(这里的they是指代谁,前面的名词是population,还是直接用deer把) can't follow their age-old patterns across the frozen sea. As we know, there is a seriesof accident swhich may cause trouble to living deer. Perhaps the local hunter did carnage to deer during earlier years so that the population of deer cannot back to the original number. Therefore(应用Moreover, lesser number of food, unbalanced sex ratio, and abnormal age distribution also could make the population decline. Without reject these assumptions, we can't accept the conclusion that the declining population of deer results from that they can't across the frozen sea.

There is another doubtful point that whether the global warm has caused the ice melting in Arctic. Though warm has brought us many trouble
s, there is no evidence of that it has seriously affected the Arctic. There is not enough data and research about that. We can't infer that ice in Arctic is melting only base on the population of arctic deer is declining. So that, the assumption that global warming caused arctic deer death is absurd.

To sum up, the conclusion can't be accepted. We can't assert
(你已经用了好几次assert了,建议换个其他的词,比如claim any conclusion only base on the local hunter'shunters’ words and our imagination, therefore, lacking of research and data will make the asserting unsubstantiated. The author needs to bring us more evidence so that we can clearly find the relevance between global warm and declining population of arctic deer.

TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 564          TIME: 01:00:00          DATE: 2010-4-26 14:42:38
practical: journalism, business, technology-->career suggestion, intern offers, benefit students.
update knowledge, keep up with the cutting edge research---->textbook lags behind for the print system and organization consideration; experience supplement.
teaching method: brain storm, field work, group discussion rather than rough and general presentation or assignment.

No one could deny the principal competiveness of a college and university is high quality instruction and education. The more excellent and practical instruction provided, the more students will be attracted and benefited from it, then the higher reputation of a college may achieve. Thus, I agree with the assertion that all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach in order to improve the quality of instruction, which clearly presented through the content of courses, the teaching methods and suggestion on students' career.

As we live in a world where knowledge is accumulating by multiplying and increasingly specialized, the knowledge taught in a college or university is inevitably out of date. Take the textbooks for example. Studies have shown that the content in textbooks lag behind the reality development as long as 5 years on average, some "classical" textbooks like Biology Science Introduction or Computer Science General printed decades ago still in use in some universities. Such knowledge is not only qualified to attract students' interests, but also useless and occupy students a lot of time. Therefore, if professors and other faculty recognize such server problems, their practical experience can work as supplement. They can bring in the cutting edge research application, which can lead students to combine the knowledge and extent their horizon. Without spending time working outside the academic world in professions relevant the courses, the faculty cannot sufficiently supplement the shortage of knowledge textbooks.

Moreover, accompanying with the traditional knowledge, old teaching methods is another deficiency of improvement of instruction quality. When faculty do some practical jobs relevant their teaching areas, they can utilize some new teaching tricks to motivate students. For example, more and more business courses are taught through brain storm, for professors adapting it from the effective decision making process in modern companies. Instead of old teaching methods, such as rough presentation, paper assignment, and professor-oriented teaching, new ways emphasize teamwork and student-oriented, which are the requirements to be qualified employees. So faculty should take part in the real relevant jobs in order to update the teaching methods.

In addition, it is undeniable that the main purpose of people attending college or university  is to get a descent job, if their teachers work in the fields they want to enter, they not only can get systematical career direction but also have easy access to get internship opportunities which will benefit them greatly.University sometimes is compared with "Ivory Tower", for the trained students hardly fulfill the demands of employers. Students lack proper identification of themselves and necessary preparation for their career goal. For example, a Journalism student who would like to be a correspondence are not capable to use camera and photo processing software which are not provided in his or her courses. If his or her teacher work as a reporter, or have experience of that he can make better preparation and have a clear career path. Also, teachers with practical interpersonal relationship can help their students to get latest internship opportunities.

All faculty should be required to work outside, however, seems a little too strict for some abstract subjects, typically philosophy and mathematics. For faculty on such kinds of subjects, theoretical advancement and academic outcome should weigh upon practical experience. In a word, generally all faculty working on real relevant jobs do improve the instruction level of a college and university.

age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea---->global warming----->deer cannot across the frozen sea------>decline/decrease
