TOPIC: ARGUMENT132 - The following appeared in an editorial in the local newspaper of Workville.
"Workers should be allowed to reduce their workload from 40 to 25 or even 20 hours per week because it is clear that people who work part-time instead of full-time have better health and improved morale. One store in Workville, which began allowing its employees to work part-time last year, reports that fewer days of sick leave were taken last year than in previous years. In contrast, the factory in Workville, which does not allow any of its employees to work part-time, had a slight increase in the number of days of sick leave taken last year. In addition, a recent survey reports that most of the store employees stated that they are satisfied with their jobs, while many of the factory employees stated that they are dissatisfied with their jobs."

The author proposes a suggestion to reduce working time from 40 to 25 or even less per week, because he/she conclude people with less workload would have better health and improved morale. The author's such conclusion is largely based on the comparison of a store and a factory in Workville (W) as well as a survey. However, his/her conclusion and therefore suggestion suffers from unfair assumptions, analogies, and insufficient examples.
Casting a look at the primary example the author's reasoning originates from, the cases of a store and a factory in W, we have justification to question whether the merely two working places would be enough to support the author's broad assertion about workers. The number of places isn't enough, neither is the type of working places. Considering that the author's statement was published in the local newspaper of W, we can fairly assume his/her suggestion is prepared for the all the corporations or other kind of place holding a number of workers. It is very possible that there are tens or hundreds, perhaps even more such constitutions in W, in a considerable number of types, such as bank, school, farm etc. Obviously, just a store and a factory are not capable to represent a general case in W.
//攻击样本数量太小,可以
In reviewing the case of the store in W, many other likely scenarios undermine the author's implicit causal relation between employee's better health condition and their actions to diminish working time. Probably, in the last year less severe endemic disease emerged, comparing with other time, thus less employees got sick. And it is equally possible, that last year the store put a more strict regulation into force, causing much more punishment when workers got absent from position. Consequently, many workers who used to pretend sick thus enjoy more leisure time would be threaten by this new rule, and have to get to work, even when some ones really suffered from slight diseases. If any is true, the author can't sanctify the reduction of workload as the reason for workers' better performances.
//攻击 非必然联系,不错
Even if it is the diminishment of working time that promoted the working condition in the store, to try to duplicate the success in other working place calls for more contemplation. As mentioned before, the store is just a particular type of working place, and it may be much different conditions in other jobs. For workers in store, usually they just have to serve for customers in their working time, and need no more preparation after work. But for some other kind of profession, such as teachers, 25 or 20 hours a week many (这里是用may么?拼写错误?) not be adequate to work well. Perhaps, the amount of their teaching time in class is already 25 all 20 hours a week, while they still have to do a lot of preparatory work after class. Thus, simply reduce working hours won’t actually help workers release workload, and therefore fail to ameliorate their health.
//攻击 结论的推广性,
有些工作,即使减轻工作时间, 并不能减轻实际工作负担
//觉得这个攻击点不太好, 稍有点牵强,
老师这么辛苦,减少老师的工作时间对他们的健康//多少也能起点作用.
//可以攻击, 提议不具有可行性, 可能小商店里的工作简单,所以可以完成,而对于很多单位,减少工作时间,工人就无法完成任务, 单位是不会接受的.
In additional, the author cites a survey in end of his/her argument, which also fails to lend strong enough support to his/her conclusion. The attitude as worker’s satisfaction may have nothing to do with health or morale. They are happy merely because they have much more leisure time, and thus have chance to enjoy more entertainment, may in form of drinking alcohol, addiction in cyber-games or having fun for whole nights. All of these behaviors would invite nothing but detriment to their body and bad performance in work of second day.
//这个观点挺新颖的,不错
To conclude, the author’s numeration of merely a store and a factory helps little to justify his/her conclusion or suggestion, as well as the survey. More details in other places, discussion by virtue of category of professions and other feasible method would help strengthen his/her reasoning otherwise.
