48. “The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of peoples whose identities have long been forgotten.”
When reading history stories, we often find out that big events are related to some individuals’ names. George Washington is remembered as the one who have made great contribution to the independence of America. Mao Zedong is honored as the hero of China. People commemorate them while pay less attention to the soldiers who strived or even devoted their lives in the struggles. Is it right that individuals who made significant decisions should be remembered over the mass of people who made great contribution? I can’t help wondering about this.
To be realistic, history did place more emphasis on individuals, the ones who were famous for leading groups of people to the triumphs. The famous few, however, are not the main power to cause the success. Behind them, are the large amounts of people who are like drops of water together to form the sea, like bricks which construct the skyscraper. Though everyone of the groups are mundane, they are powerful together.
Historical events were not easy to be made possible, it due to some specific factors as a particular period of time, a group of specialized people, and to be triggered by some incidents. Not only few famous to be needed, but also the whole condition of that period. Like old Chinese adage goes: A hero is known in the time of misfortunes. With that special time and groups of people followed by, can a gifted man turn into a leader or a hero and be remembered in the history.
However, history is not predetermined; there are always some occasional factors mixed with the inevitable trend. We all know that the history is ongoing and the old systems will be smashed by the new ones; but when it will happen is uncertain. Perhaps someday, a man who advocate for a new society with lots of people supported appears, maybe they succeed finally, and then the man will be remembered as a hero of the new society.
An individual did not determine whether a big event in history to happen or not, but did influent the time of the happening. Without Adolf Hitler, the world war was doomed to happen according to the situation in the world at that time, but maybe not provoked in German, perhaps not in 1939.
Though great people are remembered by the history, the achievements made by the masses of people have never been neglected. The reason why famous few are more emphasized on partly for the consideration of retelling historical stories. But from those individuals, we can still see the influences affected by the masses of people behind them, thus, we can say a great person also reflect the will of groups of people.
To go further, we have to realize that history is always objective, it never ignore anyone’s effort; while retelling history is subjective, some key men are commemorated for the purpose of remembering the history of that period. Both the famous few and the masses are all the promoter of history, neither of them should be neglected.
