50. From a draft textbook manuscript submitted to a publisher.
As Earth was being formed out of the collision of space rocks, the heat from those collisions and from the increasing gravitational energy of the planet made the entire planet molten, even the surface. Any water present would have evaporated and gone off into space. As the planet approached its current size, however, its gravitation became strong enough to hold gases and water vapor around it as an atmosphere. Because comets are largely ice made up of frozen water and gases, a comet striking Earth then would have vaporized. The resulting water vapor would have been retained in the atmosphere, eventually falling as rain on the cooled and solidified surface of Earth. Therefore, the water in Earth's oceans must have originated from comets."
In this argument, the arguer concludes that the water in earth’s oceans must have originated from comets, to substantiate the conclusion, the arguer points out a comet made up of frozen water and gases striking earth then would have vaporized, which eventually falling as rain on the cooled and solidified surface of Earth.. In addition, the arguer assumes that as earth was being formed out of the collision of space rocks, any water present would have evaporated and gone off into space. However, a careful examination of this argument would reveal how groundless it is.
Firstly, the idea any water present would have evaporated and gone off into space can’t be proved without enough information. Though the heat from collisions will made the entire planet molten, we can’t agree there be no water left in any forms. As we know, water appears in many forms throughout the world, such as composed organisms, and in addition, water comes from comets might be gathered around the planet, the water would fall back until the gravitational energy of the planet increased.
Secondly, water is widely existed around the planet, we can’t assert that it was comet that produced the water on earth firstly. When it comes to biology, the creatures have many means to produce water. For example, the microbe can create water through synthesization, similarly, as two kinds of H2 and O2, they can make up of water in a chemical method. Thus, the opinion water in earth’s oceans must have originated from comets is not accuracy.
What’s more, if so, the huge ocean should be produced by too many rocks, which is merely possible. Moreover, we even can’t make sure it was comet did that, water in the ocean may resulted from the earth heat rather than the power from other planet.
Admittedly, the water theory of comets originated from scientific and logic thinking, despite we have doubt in some details, it’s the convincing theory explaining the origin of the ocean. The method can produce more water is just through collisions with comets while the other ones can’t be regarded as the main trend.
To draw a conclusion, water in earth’s oceans would have originated from comet, however, this idea still has many loopholes, which is far from perfect.
