TOPIC: ARGUMENT50 - From a draft textbook manuscript submitted to a publisher. "As Earth was being formed out of the collision of space rocks, the heat from those collisions and from the increasing gravitational energy of the planet made the entire planet molten, even the surface. Any water present would have evaporated and gone off into space. As the planet approached its current size, however, its gravitation became strong enough to hold gases and water vapor around it as an atmosphere. Because comets are largely ice made up of frozen water and gases, a comet striking Earth then would have vaporized. The resulting water vapor would have been retained in the atmosphere, eventually falling as rain on the cooled and solidified surface of Earth. Therefore, the water in Earth's oceans must have originated from comets." In this article, the arguer concluded that the water in Earth's oceans must have originated from comets. For support the conclusion, the arguer proof some evidence which would happen when comets crashed the Earth. At the first glance, this article seems logical, however, it contented some questionable reasons which might undermine this conclusion.

First of all, the arguer concluded that the water in Earth's oceans must have originated from comets, for the reasons that gravitation of the earth had became strong enough to hold gases and water vapor and comets are largely ice made up of frozen water and gases. Clearly, the arguer didn't considered that the relationship between the water in Earth's oceans and the comets'. The water in Earth's ocean may originated from other sources. One of the acceptable explanation is that it may be form by hydrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere which are two elements constitutes water. During the collision of the space rocks to form the Earth, vast volume of hydrogen and oxygen were released and when there were thunderstorm and lightning, the external conditions became suitable for the two gases to be turned into water.

What’s more, granted that the entire planet was molten by the heat from the collisions and the water present has evapored and gone to space, it cannot remain the form of water vapor in atmosphere permanently. As the volume of water on Earth is so huge, if it stays the form of water vapor in atmosphere, air must be dominated by it. However, analysis of the proportion of air indicates that air does not contain so much water vapor. What is more, as Earth kept cooling down to the temperature as it is now, water vapor must have been again changed into water and fell down on Earth to form oceans. It is more reasonable to regard this water as the true source of the water in Earth's oceans today.

In addition, the arguer fails to provide any evidence that any comets have ever striked Earth before. What is the possibility of a comet striking Earth? Many people deem it dangerous to live in on Earth since there are so many small planets, meteorites, comets and other celestial objects passing by which are very likely to hit the Earth. As a matter of fact, according to the calculation of an astronomer, the possibility of a comet hitting the Earth tends to be rather small. Every comet has its own orbit and moves along it instead of flying everywhere as people imagine. Furthermore, even a comet has stroked Earth some time in history, is it large enough to contain so much water to form the ocean on Earth? It is known to all that about 70%of the surface of the Earth is covered by water while a comet is relatively small compared with the Earth.

In sum, to make his argument more convincing, the arguer would have to produce more concrete evidence and rule out other possibilities to support his conclusion, such as the occurrence of comets striking the Earth

First of all, the arguer concluded that the water in Earth's oceans must have originated from comets, for the reasons that gravitation of the earth had became strong enough to hold gases and water vapor and comets sustain largely ice made up of frozen water and gases. (从这段的第一句看,还以为你是要批驳地球引力没能力吸引住水。但后面的分析很棒!)

In addition, the arguer fails to provide any evidence that any comet have ever striked Earth before. What is the possibility of a comet striking Earth? (三个论点的顺序有待调整,开头结尾还可以写详细点来加强文章结构。如果是在30分钟内写出来的,只有两个字送你:佩服!)
