TOPIC: ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
WORDS: 597
TIME: 01:15:09
DATE: 7/31/2010 11:09:22 AM

Nowadays, as competition is becoming fiercer for students, some of them begin to focus only on improving examination scores and do not doubt the knowledge they learned from teachers or textbooks. In my point of view, students should, instead of accepting what they are taught passively, question whatever they study and keep a skeptical mind. Skepticism could not only help students of their study, but also benefit the world of knowledge.

On one hand, students are able to acquire knowledge better by keeping certain skepticism to whatever they study. Teachers encourage students to doubt whatever they learn, not expecting the students are able to find a flaw in the well-refined axioms and theorems, but hoping the students could, in this way, comprehend the knowledge better. To question about what they are learned, students must first fully comprehend what they have learned already. They may review their textbooks and notebooks, re-deduce the theorems, and clarify the meaning of every parameter. In this process, they inadvertently go over their courses which at first they may not have clear idea about. The next step of doubting is to find the points to attack in these seemingly well-reasoned theorems. Students must learn relative knowledge extensively to figure out the point to attack, and the extra knowledge in their turn adds to what the students have already learned. Finally, students may fail in overthrow these axioms, but they have already benefited from this spirit of skepticism, which they would most probably keep as a habit to help with their study in the future. On the contrary, students who only accept whatever they are taught passively are sure to miss the benefits mentioned above, and may even find what the teacher keeps teaching dull and tragically gradually lose the interest of learning. Conclusively, students' questioning whatever they are taught instead of accepting it passively would significantly help them with their study.

On the other hand, culturing the students the spirit of skepticism would also benefit the world of knowledge in the future. Students would not always be students: they will grow up as engineers, scientists, doctors, lawyers and so on. As they have chosen their careers, it is their time to absorb, refine and develop knowledge in their fields. Only by doubting can a stemmed theory be overthrown and the newer and more perfect one takes the place, in which can knowledge progress. Aristotle, a Greek philosopher, proposed a comprehensive system of Western philosophy and his views on the physical sciences profoundly shaped medieval scholarship. He was so respected that long after his time seldom anyone dared to doubt his theories. However, Galileo doubted Aristotle's words that heavy objects would fall faster than lighter ones. Galileo conducted an experiment of dropping balls of the same material, but different masses, from the Leaning Tower of Pisa and demonstrated that their time of descent was independent of their mass. His spirit of skepticism not only enables him the title "the father of modern physics", but also brings about the time of classical mechanics, which was a great advance in science and added to the base of knowledge. As we could see, merely inheriting the knowledge of precursors would make no progress, while questioning whatever one learns is the way to contributing the world of knowledge and propelling the world from advancing.

To sum up, students, those with knowledge and would become ones actively participating in various majors, should proactively foster the spirit of skepticism, not only beneficial to themselves in their study, but also contributive to the world of knowledge.

Nowadays, as competition is becoming fiercer for students, some of them begin to focus only on improving examination scores and do not doubt the knowledge they learned from teachers or textbooks 可以写成:the current society has witnessed an increasingly fierce competition among students...]. In my point of view, students should, instead of accepting what they are taught passively, question whatever they study and keep a skeptical mind. Skepticism could not only help students of[in] their study, but also benefit the world of knowledge[?

On one hand, students are able to acquire knowledge better by keeping certain skepticism to whatever they study. Teachers [shall]encourage students to doubt whatever they learn, [but need not to expect? 这整个句子的语法好像不大对哦]not expecting the students are able to find a flaw in the well-refined axioms and theorems, but [shall instead hope 我不是完全明白这句想要表达的句义]hoping the students could, in this way, comprehend the knowledge better. To question about what they[have] are learned, students must first fully comprehend what they have learned already. They may review their textbooks and notebooks, re-deduce the theorems, and clarify the meaning of every parameter. In this process, they inadvertently go over their courses which at first they may not have clear idea about. The next step of doubting is to find the points to attack in these seemingly well-reasoned theorems. Students must learn relative[relavant] knowledge extensively to figure out the point to attack, and the extra knowledge in their[delete 'turn'] turn adds to what the students have already learned. Finally, students may fail in overthrow[ing] these axioms, but they have already benefited from this spirit of skepticism, which they would most probably keep as a habit to help with their study in the future. On the contrary, students who only accept whatever they are taught passively are sure to miss the benefits mentioned above, and may even find what the teacher keeps teaching dull and tragically gradually lose the interest of learning. Conclusively, students' questioning whatever they are taught instead of accepting it passively would significantly help them with their study[本段的长句太多了,看起来有点累,尤其是本来都是纯粹的论证,读者很可能不会耐心读下来。 .

On the other hand, culturing [好像不能这么用]the students the spirit of skepticism would also benefit the world of knowledge [这样看来应该想表达的是the realm of science]in the future. Students would not always be students: they will grow up as engineers, scientists, doctors, lawyers and so on. As they have chosen their careers, it is their time to absorb, refine and develop knowledge in their fields. Only by doubting can a stemmed theory be overthrown and the newer and more perfect one takes the place, in which can knowledge progress[好像不必用倒装]. Galileo conducted an experiment [to drop]of dropping balls of the same material, but different masses[weight?], from the Leaning Tower of Pisa and demonstrated that their time of descent [falling]was independent of their mass. 。。]

To sum up, students, those with knowledge and would become ones actively participating in various majors, should proactively foster the spirit of skepticism, 【which is】not only beneficial to themselves in their study, but also contributive to the world of knowledge.
