Scientific research has been one of the major driving forces behind the development of our society. As a result, governments around the globe have set the encouragement of scientific research as a center issue on their agenda.[前两句考虑合成一句?不然TS第三四句才出来。个人建议。] While I don't object the idea that we shall try every means to support our scientists in their work, I disagree with the statement in the sense that restrictions on scientific research are harmful. My opinion is that[My opinion is that可以不要吧] there is a need for the government to adopt moral standards to tame the potentially dangerous dragon of science and [+apply,不然离adopt太远了] funding controls to guide its on-going direction.[开头很吸引人,略有些长,应该把时间省出来花在主体段上]
In the first place, I believe scientific development is a double-sword[“双刃剑”的表述,Double-edged sword,我用的是在NCE4中提到的two-edged weapon] and sadly, governments have not done enough to limit its bad effects. Human being have noticed the negative side-effects with technology[不用with吧,technology brought about] as early as 4000 years ago, when Chinese philosophers raised the argument for a "harmonious coexistence between the human and the heaven", namely, human beings do not have the rights to disturb natural objects with technologies possessed by them. Unfortunately, we are still leading to the wrong direction in a faster pace in modern times. Our environment, for example, has been badly affected by modern technology advancement: cars, factories, plastic bags, etc[仅列举是不够的。可以这样写cars that pollute the air, factories that contaminate the water, and plastic bags that suffocate the plant]. We invented nuclear power, which resulted in the disastrous atom bombs and the Chernobyl tragedy; we developed the technology to exploit seabed crude oil, but failed to prevent the spillover of oil from the oil field in the Mexico Gulf and the Chinese Dalian port. Our governments have underestimated the potential danger with new technologies or/and failed to exert appropriate limitation on the development of science.[能放能收] Without more specific and powerful government restrictions employed to put the development of science back to its normal track, away from a crazy rush for profits, we may end in encountering more untold suffering both for us and for our future generations.[这段总结得太好了,论证很有力~!]
Restrictions on scientific research may include ethical standards and funding controls, and government can make use of both of the two means by actively funding those research that are morally justified, conservatively funding those with controversies, and ban those running against our ethics.[这种说法比较新颖] A good instance may be the reactions by governments of various nations towards the birth of the cloned Scottish sheep Dolly. The success with Dolly showed in front of us the horrible prospect of a cloned man, which in turn reminded us of the tragedy described by Shelly's famous yet horrible fiction Frankenstein. The serious ethical problem and the unpredicted results with a possible cloned man had forced government to take a very strong position against the development of human cloning technology. Soon after Dolly's birth, the British government withdrew its funding for the Dolly research team, though under the pressure of clone scientists, it resumed part of its financial support months later. In various other areas, like research in human cells, similar funding restrictions have also been adopted to prevent possible future problems.[其实你从这个角度讲克隆问题,很新颖。例子似乎想说明政府能通过干涉科研来为社会施以正确的伦理道德取向,不过可能由于时间比较紧张,这个段落如果能在结尾段再重申一下主题就好了。]
In sum, scientific technologies are so powerful that they can both work for the benefits and the loss of us. Strict restrictions have to be taken to tightly control the development and use of technology, for the betterment of our society at present and in the future.[嗯~不错的结尾~] |
