127.The vice presidentfor human resources at Climpson Industries sent the following recommendation tothe company's president.
"In an effort to improve ouremployees' productivity, we should implement electronic monitoring ofemployees' Internet use from their workstations. Employees who use the Internetfrom their workstations need to be identified and punished if we are to reducethe number of work hours spent on personal or recreational activities, such asshopping or playing games. By installing software to detect employees' Internetuse on company computers, we can prevent employees from wasting time, foster abetter work ethic at Climpson, and improve our overall profits."
The argument is based on the assumptionthat electronic monitor can prevent employee wasting their time on personalbusiness, as a result, employee's productivity can be improved.
1) Not practical or fair: monitor cannotdistinguish personal business and occupational business exactly. (1) Need to go to shopping website to collectinfo (2) People can play game without internet (3) when the monitor mistakesthe result, people's working passion will be hurt.
2) Will have bad affect on employee's morale and loyalty. They are beingmonitor. Their boss does not trust them. Productivity could not be improved.
3) It is reasonable that employee hasrecreational time at work.
4) Work efficiency is more important thantime
133.The following is a memo from theprincipal of Academia High School.
"Academia High School should abolishits after-school performing-arts programs and replace them withcomputer-technology programs. When nearby Techno High School did so last year, total enrollment in all of its after-school activities remained about the same. Moreover, on entering college, many Techno students chose a major directlyrelated to their after-school activities. On the other hand, last year only 10percent of Academia's graduating seniors chose performing arts as their majorfield of study in their first year of college, clearly indicating that moststudents do not have a strong interest in the performing arts."
1) The same enrollment doesn't indicate thesuccess of computer-techno class in Techno High school. The students go therejust because of convention, or other benefit, but not due to interest.
2) Even if it succeeds in Techno High, itdoesn't necessary mean it will succeed in Academia High. Do they have the same qualityof teachers? The same equipment? The same background?
3) The major doesn't indicate one'sinterest. Student sometimes choose the major for job sake.
156.The following is taken from anadvertisement placed in a weekly business magazine by the Dickens Academy.
"We distributed a survey to seniormanagement at International Mega-Publishing, Inc. The result of the surveyclearly indicates that many employees were well prepared in business knowledgeand computer skills, but lacked interpersonal skills to interact gracefullywith customers. International Mega-Publishing decided to improve customersatisfaction by sending their newly hired employees to our one-day seminars.Since taking advantage of our program, International Mega-Publishing has seen asharp increase in sales, an indication that the number of their disgruntledcustomers has declined significantly. Your company should hire Dickens and letus turn every employee into an ambassador for your company."
1) The speaker overstates the effect: newlyhired employees won't be a big partition of the whole crew; They will not workin important position, how can they sharply increase the sales?
2) There are 2 kinds of new hiredemployees, new graduated, and experienced. both of them need this training?
3) The curriculumsare effective in Mega, but not bound to be effective in other companies.
178.The following appeared in the annualreport from the president of the National Brush Company.
"In order to save money, we at theNational Brush Company have decided to pay our employees for each brush theyproduce instead of for the time they spend producing brushes. We believe thatthis policy will lead to the production of more and better brushes, will allowus to reduce our staff size, and will enable the company factories to operatefor fewer hours—resulting in savings on electricity and security costs. Thesechanges will ensure that the best workers keep their jobs and that the companywill earn a profit in the coming year."
1) In order to be more productive, thequality could be ignored. So the brush will not be better.
2) In order to secure the job, employeesmay work extra hours and more work accident may happen. It may be impossible toreduce operational cost.
3) the keen competition will be harm toemployee's health and destroy the teamwork spirit. Employee may be unwilling toshare experience and destroy others' work |
