The speaker claim that all faculty should spend time to work outside academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach concerning to improve the quality o instruction. From the suggestion, however, we can realize an unsound hypothesis that experience of working outside college or university will contribute to the improvement of instruction. Besides, even if the hypothesis should be well supported, it will be more detrimental than beneficial to put that suggestion into practice.
In the first place, it is not necessary always be the case that working outside campus benefits the quality of instruction. Admittedly, if all faulty spend some time to work outside University in professions relevant to the course they teach, it will profitable for students they teach because the faulty will care more about connecting their theories to practice, resulting the more competitive for their students. However, on the large part, it won’t turn out like that. Firstly, the quality of instruction depends on many factors, such as teaching facilities, teaching skills of instructors, the arrangement of curricula and so forth. Thus, considering the improvement of the quality of instruction, we should find out which the very factors are, then we figure out ways to settle it. Secondly, different curriculum possesses different characters, not every course tie closely to jobs in society. For example, it won’t be justifiable to require instructors who teaching philosophy to gain working experience, for philosophy doesn’t tie to specific job.
In the second place, even if the hypothesis is true, it isn’t still feasible and advisable considering demerits of that suggestion. Firstly, like all other employees, we cannot guarantee that all faculty can find a perfect job relevant to the courses they teach. Secondly, if faculty do find their jobs, it will be a challenge to assign their available time to the two jobs. In fact, under most circumstances, it will be impossible for faulty to teach their students well while working outside and possibly many instructors will give up the job in school since high incomes are offered in companies.
Thirdly, on condition that the above two problems are settled, there is a problem coming out, and that is the job requirement would decrease since many faculty have possessed two jobs. Thus, there will be thousands of graduates confronting the high risk of unemployment.
Finally, due to the unavailability of that suggestion, to improve the quality of instruction, we should firstly do a research on the quality of instruction and we can figure out ways to enhance the quality of instruction. |
