ARGUMENT 232 - The following appeared in a memo from the sales manager of Eco-Power, a company that manufactures tools and home appliances.

"Many popular radio and television commercials use memorable tunes and song lyrics to call attention to the products being advertised. Indeed, a recent study of high school students showed that 85 percent could easily recognize the tunes used to advertise leading soft drinks and fast-food restaurants. Despite our company's extensive advertising in magazines during the past year, sales of our home appliances declined. Therefore, to boost company profits, we should now switch to advertisements featuring a distinctive song."

author suggests that the company should now switch to advertisements featuring a distinctive song for the increase of profits
reasons: a recent study of high school students showed that 85 percent could easily recognize the tunes used to advertise leading soft drinks and fast-food restaurants.
Despite our company's extensive advertising in magazines during the past year, sales of our home appliances declined.

oppose the author: the study concerns the  soft drinks and fast-food restaurants,not our tools and home appliances, so it may not be useful for us.
our extensive advertising in the past year didn't work, because the way we advertise is not right , we should advertise more in TV and radio, and the  memorable tune may not be fit for our products.
The cost for progressing this could be more than the income we receive, so if it is reasonable is a question.

这是我8月27号的考试题目。
现在的框架和当时也差不多。宿舍十一点熄灯,没时间了还是写中文吧。
1.家居用品和饮料的错误类比,两者不具可比性。
2.对高中生的调查不能代表所有消费群体的意见,高中生很可能不是家居用品的消费主力。而真正的消费主力很可能是成年人,他们很可能不喜欢特立独行的歌曲。
3.没有任何证据表明只改广告形式就能促进消费量的提高。很可能是别的因素影响了销量,比如竞争,比如产品质量,比如产品价格过高消费者接受不了。只改广告未必能提高销量。

(1)首先不能确定去年在杂志上做的广告were unimpressive and unattractive,这些广告effect是不是good enough, 并且因此contributed to the销量的下降。需要作出一个调查来判断去年的广告是否有足够的覆盖面wide enough coverage and whether can be well recognized by the readers of these magazines.
(2)soft drink and fast-food restaurants advertisements 的例子不足以说明using memorable tunes and song lyrics in advertisements is an effective way to promote sales. 1' 不能确定是因为曲调而使respondents recognized这些广告,而可能是广告的画面效果striking image effect或者故事情节exciting plots使他们注意了广告,thus remembered the tunes in these advertisements. 2' 两种广告的style的风格是不一样的,可能年轻人比较关注喜软饮料和快餐,并且喜欢memorable tunes and song lyrics ,而家用电器的消费者多为adults,不一定喜欢这种广告风格。 comsumer group

(3)作者需要调查清楚销量下降的真实原因。All the possible factors should be takan into consideraton.可能是质量下降或者是after-sale services were not satisfactory.或者是prices are not competitive. df或者国内经济情况不好,或者a decline in manufacturing industry.

(1) The author fails to rule out other possiblities that may result in the decline of the sales of EP home appliances besides the ads in magazines.
The correlation between the ads in magazine and sales decline is not causal relation.
(2) Even though it is likely that high school students could easily recognize the tunes used to advertise leading soft drinks and fast-food restaurants, switching to advertisements featuring a distincitve song may have little effect on the revenue for our home appliances. (Fault analogy)
(3) Whether high school students are representitive for the study is not known, so the study is problematic itself.
