TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
Everyone knows that it is hard to get to know a person, let alone a society. So you could know a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. But if you want to know more, you couldn’t simply do it that way.
When we meet someone for the first time, we could image what kind of person he is only by his appearance, by his behavior. But if you want to know more about him, you have to stay with him for a long time by observing the way he speaking, thinking, and doing things. After that you could have whole view of him. Then you can say you can tell much about him.
When it comes to a society, things almost stay the same. When you move to a new country you could know what kind of clothes they wear, what kind of food you eat, how they spend they free time, and so on. For example when you first come to the USA, you will find people there speaking English and they like fast food. Then you know you have to speak English to communicate with the local people. When you want to eat you have no choice but fast food, for they all prefer fast food. In this way you can know a society by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
Observing the appearance and behavior of its people you can know the way they live. If you want to know more, like their belief or the level of education, can you know this by observing the appearance and behavior of its people? Someone may say if you see someone wearing a white hat, you will know he is a Muslim. Yes, it is. This is only in some special situation, when you at a place where the people look and behave like you, can you make sure their belief are just like you? The answer is negative. Observing the appearance and behavior of its people can only give you limit number of messages. If you want to know more, you have to observe them for a long time and then join them, talk to them, know what thing, know how they think, do the way they do. After a long time you can say you can tell much about of a society.
At the 1970’s , the whole world don’t know much about China , like what we know about north Korea today. People from other countries get to know about China by limit number of news. Then a France director came to China, for he wanted to know about more China. He lived in Beijing for more than two years. Every morning he joined the crowd people going to work. At noon he went to dining hall eating with workers. In the evening he talked with the citizens. In two years time he knew a lot about China from the way the country operating to the life of a common people. After this he made a film called China, the film showed what China really looks like.
From all above we can conclude that we can tell about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people, but if you want to tell much about that you have to take a long time, not just a short time.
