According to the speaker, various kinds of arts, such as painting, music and literatre in a society reveal its otherwise hidden ideas and impulses. While I agree that in some certain respects the forms of painting, literature, music and constructions reveal the people's aesthetic value, meanwhile show the ideas and impulses of the society. But it seems that the speaker's assertion is an overstatement about the function of arts, because a society's ideas and impulses can be indicated by technology, instruction. Thus, the assertion unfairly generalizes art.
Turning first to the music and musicians. Bach can be described as a specific religious musician, he is among the top musicians in Europe during the Medieval period. During the century, the most important , representative and typical theme of music is religion, the religious music is, in other words, the mainstream at that time. Including Bach, many outstanding musicians compose a plethora of music in honor of Gods, even though whose composing was simply accomplishing their job-- serving as a musician in a church. That it comes to a theme that play a major and significant role in European people's life-- religion, on which the government base to draw a law, in which majority of people believe, and more importantly, it is the guidance of people's behaviour, particularly in terms of moral level. Thus, in some certain ages, the destiny of music express people and society's ideas.
Turning next to the other forms of art. painting reveals the disigner's aesthetic value, if assume the painting is widely appreciated by the people, it can be a signal of the idea of beauty of this society. In addition, equally important, literature is capable to play the similar role.
Admittedly, some certain forms of art has the capacity for indicate a society's idea, in some respects mentioned above. However, it is not the indication of impulse-- at least in terms of the substance level-- of a society. Few would disagree that technology, from which human has benefit a lot, is a indication of a society's idea and, more importantly, impulses. But, how about the modified word "hidden", as one may argue? Before answering this question, we should firstly concern on the objective of inventions , or say originality , which is, as we all know, the ultimate impulse of the technology, and finally the industry that we people directly benefit from. With the objective of bettering our way of life, making our daily life more convenient, improving condition of living and transportation, and reaching a balance between human being and all other species, and exploring outer space, researchers and scientists keep working day and night. On account of the purposes above, new inventions are being created, that is why technologies keep developing, and than pushing the whole society forward. In conclusion, technology is one of major impulse of a society, and the destiny of the inventions behind the technology indicate the hidden idea and impulses of the society.
Furthermore, ways in instruction can also reveal some feature of a society and its people. Germans and Japanese are cautious, they strictly obey the rules shared by majorities and concern on details. Americans focus on individuals more than the whole, on liberty more than dogmas. All of these can be reflected in their life-style and other aspects.
In sum, art can reveal a society's hidden ideas and impulses in some respects, whereas, if we define "otherwise" more widely-- in terms of not only substance but also abstract level-- arts may fail to act as the indication of ideas and impulses. Thus, the assertion is has overstated the function of art. As vivid phenomenons in our daily life, technology, instruction can reveal the society's otherwise hidden ideas and impulses. |
