题目:society does not place enough emphasis on the intellect- that is, on reasoning and other cognitive skills.
-----------------------------------------
Does society ignore the intellect--on reasoning and other cognitive skills, or does society place enough emphasis on it? In my view, it is apparently true that society neglect the intellect. And people are passively accepting news. However, this is not the case because one would not be able to obtain the information he needs, if he does not have his own judgment.

Some might stand on the side of the speaker, on the basis that today's society demands more workers than scientists.  Admittedly, nowadays graduates holding master's degree or MBA are far easier to find jobs than PH.D graduates. That is to say, demanding of workers in today's society is much higher than that of scientists. Even if a PH.D graduate find a job, he is most likely to play a role of a technician, who does repetitive works day after day, rather than a scientist who focus on creative works involving reasoning and cognitive skills. Yet this is not true because the supply of scientists have doubled over the past 25 years, but the social demand remains. In other words, the social requirement of intellect has not decreased.

Moreover, some might argue that with the development of technology, we have entered an information era. Faced with the massive information, all people could do is to passively accept it, without cognition and selection. Therefore, it is seems true that today's society ignores the intellect. However, they have overlooked things hidden behind. Although the information people facing is more than ever, there is no evidence that people's reasoning and cognitive skills have been weakened. The phenomenon that many people passively accept massive information does not mean that intellect is no longer important. Obviously, most of the publications on the media have been carefully selected by professionals: News would be selected by editors while science reports would be judged by other scientists in the same area. No raw information would be published.

Another compelling argument is that in the information era, society requires people to select and judge information they need on a daily basis. The fact that people passively accept information does not mean that intellect is unimportant. On contrary, it is more important than in any other era else. Immersed in the sea of massive information, one has to own the outstanding ability to select and judge what he needs, while discarding the irrelevant information. While the targeted information is sound, the irrelevant information is noise. Obviously, one’s ear has to be sharp enough to hear the sound, when the noise is louder than ever. It would certainly be a waste of time if one reads too much undesired information. As a result, reasoning and cognitive skills are more important than ever in today’s society.

In the final analysis, the speaker's statement is fundamentally incorrect. On the surface, the society is demanding more workers and less scientists with cognitive and reasoning skills, and the public are more prone to passively accept information. However, this is not true in that the information has already been selected by professionals before publication on the media. In addition, intellect is more important than ever for one, in order to quickly pick up the piece of information he needs.

Does society ignore the intellect--on reasoning and other cognitive skills, or does society place enough emphasis on it? In my view,[u] it is apparently true that society neglect the intellect. And people are passively accepting news. However, this is not the case because one would not be able to obtain the information he needs, if he does not have his own judgment。
It might seem tempting to agree with the speaker, on the basis that today's society demands more workers than scientists.

Faced with the massive information, (what)all people could do is to passively accept it, without cognition and selection. Therefore, it is apparently true that today's society ignores the intellect. However, this argument is based on a hasty generalization. We have overlooked things hidden behind. No raw information would be published.(intellect 到底是否未被重视?

Another compelling argument is that in the information era, society requires people to select and judge information they need. As a result, reasoning and cognitive skills are more important than ever(before) in today’s society [so it is never too emphasized to intellect, even neglected sometimes](总算看出支持Issue的)

In the final analysis, the speaker's statement is fundamentally incorrect On the surface, the society is demanding more workers and less scientists with cognitive and reasoning skills, and the public are more prone to passively accept information. However, this is not true in that the information has already been selected by professionals before publication on the media. In addition, intellect is more important than ever for one, in order to quickly pick up the piece of information he needs.
