"Did you watch the 'Fantasy 4'?" a friend of mine asked me. Admittedly, today, the fantasy movies are the most popular among present people. And the need of some people, who are not satisfied with some aspects of realistic world, are catered to by the pursuits of fancied paranormal and psychic power owned by fabled superheroes, astrology, fortune-telling, and the like. They to some extent fulfill the need of our society in the vacancy mainstream science can not play a role in, yet the mainstream science is vital to our society.

Firstly, many people today pay most attention to the nonmainstream areas of inquiry, and the main reason for that may be the fear of the uncertain future which the present mainstream science can not foretell yet. A man fired right now may want to know when he can get a profit job; a girl losing touch with her lover may want to know whether she can find him; an orphan without any trace about his identity may want to know when and where he would find his real parents. All these problems are hardly solved by the mainstream science. It appears that astrology, fortune-telling, and the forth may give them the hope to keep trying and the light to live brighter.

Secondly, the unfair events in the society, which perhaps are not easily settled by lawyer or government, may arouse the desire of paranormal and psychic power. In “superman”, one of the most famous movie series, the hero’s opponents are always ruffians, such as Lex Luthor, the leader of a national company, which do evil like pollution, business cheat, and so on. And each time superman appears and wins the battle against the ruffians. Although it is only a cartoon, but it reflect the people’s want of justice.

Whether these nonmainstream pursuits play a more important role than mainstream science in our society? The answer is obviously not. It is true the nonmainsream pursuits have being aspects of present society. And in some areas, like movie, cartoon, and the like, they have been an industry. Yet, it should be taken into account that which is the main force to accelerate today's society improvement, the things like astrology or the mainstream science. Most people know the computer does not work depending upon the mind energy; most people believes the plane does not fly without fuel. The vital factor of advancement of human is mainstream science they let people land on the moon, fly cross the continents, dive to the bottom of ocean, and so forth. It accelerates the efficiency of industry by the usage of electricity, electronics, and computer technology, to make people live more suitably.

To summit, astrology, fortune-telling, and the like could hardly push the modernization ahead, but they truly satisfy some need of today's people. By contrast, the mainstream science is the main force to advance our society.
