Issue38 : "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."

Nowadays, television becomes a mainstream medium for people to acquaint the information. I concede that there are not as much people as before to read books while lots of them choose to watch television. However, several significant advantages to choose reading books beyond television I will illustrate below are enough to disprove the speaker's assertion, say, television can't undermine the status of books even replace it.

At first, from the point of user, books possesses many merits which the television is totally lack of. Books are convenient media for everyone. They are in small size and very light, at the same time, they don't need the power to operate. The reader can bring the books around and they are prepared to be read at any time. The common circumstances happed to television watching is that the electricity is cut off while we are so abstracted by the program. It's so frustrated. However, this is never happened on books. You can totally immerge into your learning as long as you will.

Secondly, since most of television programs have been involved into certain politics, they can hardly provide us the impartial, complete information. As a major tool for propagand, the television program certainly will not issue the news or report against the political party they presented even in the democratic society. The whole package of information is filtered and only those towards certain interest group are left. Thus, the knowledge learned by people will inevitably to be one-sided and intolerant, and by which the television is not suit to be an education implement.

Thirdly, as a comparatively passive media, the television can not serve to cultivate the children's creativity and perception. There's a research article ever report that the children spend more times on watching TV are less imagination than those spend time on books, even those spend time on playing. The children sit front of a TV set are simply watching the pictures by pictures mechanically. They don't even have the time to make a further thinking on the picture they saw, then it flitted away. On the contrary, the learning pace can be controlled while reading the books. When the children don't totally comprehend the content, they have the enough time to stick on there until the problem is clear. To the adults, as far as know, most people including myself choose the books as the major tool for learning because we found that reading books can make a stronger impress on the memory and harder to forget than the television does.

There are also many joys come with reading the books. We can't experience the relaxation and happiness of finding the book in the library. We also can't experience the surprise of getting an interesting book in bookstore while searching for another one. Reading books can provide us such experiences outside of books. What can television bring to us? I can’t figure it out.

Admittedly, television serves to a strong medium in certain types of circumstances such as spatial, contemporary report. It can spread the information timely and vividly. In addition, it can provide the real sound to the watcher, while I think the best author can’t depict a sheep or a bird’s voice properly.

In sum, in process of learning, the books are the optimal choice beyond the television for its portability, objectivity, illumination and many joyful experiences accompanied with it. The negative and positive traits of television decide it can serve as a good assistant in the learning but not the best one.
