------题目------
The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives.
------正文------
I do agree with the opinion that the study of history has much value to what is relevant to our daily lives. And I also approve that studying history contributes to academic researches and further improvement of our society in the future.
First of all, learning from historical knowledge, we could know lots of typical problems and the corresponding solutions. We could pay more attention to these aspects and try to avoid or prevent the problems that turned up before. For example, the history books show that some regions in the west of China once were fertile and abundant hundreds of years ago, but have become desert in recent dozens of years because of the increasing lost of a great deal of soil and water there. And history tells us that the solution is to protect the forests and woods, to limit the disafforestation, and to look for some other alternatives to avoid using too much wood. Since it is directly relevant to our survivals and living conditions.
Secondly, history recorded a number of failures that antecedents have proved to be false, which we need not put much manpower, money, and time on them. A case in point is the well-known inventor Thomas Edison, who invented the incandescent lamp. We learn from the history that he tried thousands of materials before he found that tungsten filament could be use in produce bulbs. Therefore, we produce tungsten lamps in large quantity and use them widely in our daily lives. Thanks to the former experience, especially the failing ones, we could save much resource and time to research them from the first step, and could do improvement based on them.
In addition, the value of learning history is not only beneficial to our daily lives, but also contribute to many other aspects, such as the academic research. In each academic field, it has its own research history recording the procedure of the theory development. Every new academic step leap need concrete foundation, which includes most success and failure in the past. For instance, the comparative cost theory from David Ricardo is based on the absolute cost theory from Adam Smith. That is to say the comparative cost theory could not be draw easily without the former theory, because the investigative method and principle used by David Ricardo are similar to that of the absolute cost theory. Therefore, the continuity of development of theory could account for the importance of history study.
In sum, we can get the conclusion that history studying is valuable to broad extent that it is relevant to various aspects of our society. There are still several other facets under discussion which, unfortunately, I have no time to explore in detail here. But the above-discussed reasons should in a large sense justify my conclusion.
