150"Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a result, tourism will soon become obsolete."





The speaker maintains that tourism will soon become obsolete because of television and worldwide computer connections, which I can hardly agree with. It is true that people will become familiar with many places they have never visited, but it does not mean that people will not want to visit these places.

Admittedly, as the speaker claims, television and worldwide computer connections facilitate people much to get information about places they have never visited. Now if people want to get some information about a place, they can just visit some web sites. By enjoying pictures or words or videos on web, people will get some basic information of the place, like location, history, climate, culture and so on. However, it does not mean that people will be satisfied and will not want to visit the place anymore, for there are many limits of web. First of all, information on web can never give a person live feeling and impression of some place. For example, there are many pictures or videos about mountains, however, no matter how beautiful and impressive the mountains are in the pictures or videos, they cannot give people the strong impression about steepness and green and variety of trees or other little creatures in the mountain which can only be felt when visiting it. Secondly, information on web is rigid and cannot change according to people’ will, that is to say, information on the web depends on the person who provides it, not the one who is getting the information. However, if some person visits some place, the person can get information about the place in any perspective as his/her will. In all, information got from computer connections or television cannot peer the feeling and impression got from tourism.

Contrary to the assertion of the speaker, in my mind, tourism will even be more prosperous in the future due to television and computer connections. As stated above, computer connections and television can provide some information about places one have never visited, then many people will see the beautiful picture of the place and may probably be fascinated and decide to visit the place. Nowadays it is common that some one surfing on the web searching for some information about sceneries and decides where to go depending on the information got from web. It can be inferred that in the future, when web connections are more convenient, more and more people will get information about a beautiful place on web or from television and are attracted to visit it.

In conclusion, television and computer connections have some inherent disadvantages when bringing impressions. People can never get the feeling and impression of visiting some place from computer or television. Contrary to the statement of the speaker, television and computers may help tourism to prosper because they can provide some basic information about a place and attract more people to visit the place.
