Who made the most significant events and trends in history possible ? The famous few or groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten? The author prefers the latter, and hence complains that the study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. I partly agree with this statement, which is a little extreme. In my opinion, the debate that who made the history, those few elite or the common majority, must be considered from a case-by-case point of view.

To begin with, in the field of science, the achievements are mostly made by the few, and it is reasonable for the study of history to only focus on elites. This can be understood very easily. Since the research on science is so hard an endeavor, which calls for efforts,  intellects, patience, enthusiasm, curiosity and the master of knowledge , only a few people can play this role well for their whole life. Every period of time, science and technology are advanced by a few talents---or called elites. The common people  just share the results of those progress. Thus it is considerable to say that a few elites push the science forward.  

However, in the realm of art or literature, it seems a little different that the few elites has to rely on majority at times. For example, one of the most famous artists, Beethoven, composed the famous music illustrating the light of moon by the inspiration which he encountered when walking outside. He heard the sound of piano played by a blind girl and was moved by her experience, which turned out to be the impulse to compose music. Here is another example in the realm of literature. Balzac, know as a noted realism writer in France, made his famous series of novels by the phenomena he saw in French society. Like such achievement, only the composer can not finish his work without inspiration, themes, sources, most of which come from the common people. From this sense, the accomplishments in the field of art or literature are partly attributed to the majority except for those elites.

Further, the effect of people in the field of society makes much more significant than those of the two realms above. A famous example can illustrate this point of view well. The Normandy Campaign, the allied invasion of Europe in World War II, is considered to be rather crucial in the war history. It is well known that this military operation is led by General Eisenhower, however, we can never neglect the effects of the soldiers who made their great efforts in the beach, especially those encountering heavy resist of German army. Without their fearless sacrifice, this campaign would never be success at any rate. So it is the same with other wars and social revolutions. The leaders use their intellects while the common people give their firm support even by sacrifice. Thus, the progress must be attributed to the majority as well as the minority.     

In sum, the question that which of the two groups--- the few elites and the common people--- made the most significant contribution to the history has a case-by-case answer. So it is the same with that which groups should be paid more attention in the study of history. The most important point is who made the major contribution to the history.

To begin with, in the field of science, the achievements are mostly made by the few, and it is reasonable for the study of history to only focus on elites. This can be understood very easily. However既然是分成了3个领域,段落之间的关系就应该是基本并列的吧,最多也只有小的起伏,而however语气太强点了吧?, in the realm of art or literature, it seems a little different that the few elites has to rely on majority at times.
