"The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
I strongly agree with the statement that the absence of choice is very rare in our lives. To some degree, without choosing we cannot continue our study, work and so on. How to meet with those choices and how to choose the suitable way for us is a kind of knowledge we should learn.
Plenty of choices we must deal with from the time we open our eyes in the morning to the moment we fall in sleep. What we should eat in breakfast, what we should dress on today, what we should deal with our work, which kind of class we should take; all that are choices we should confront with during a day. Except those options, we still need to choose a suitable career for living, find a good person to spend with him or her or along our lives, and so on. Those choices maybe cannot be done one day, it need us use our mind and think over and over again.
But still lots of person complain that they have no choice. They cannot choose their work, choose their marriage, or even be controlled by destiny without any opportunity to choose. Why they claim so? First of all, some of them only want choose those options beyond their ability. With the economic reform, many middle aged workers come off from factories. Without incoming, their daily lives were plunged into jam. They want to get a new job the same as “decent” as before, while they do not want to take those “demeaning job”. In the competitive society, their needs may be difficult to meet. They claim that they have no any choice to change their situation. But it is not because they have no choice, but only because they do not want to choice those jobs they disdain. Moreover, some people complain that they always have bad luck, and their destinies doom their lives. Their unfortunate things all done by fate, such as their shops’ bankrupt and their failure in investment. To some extent, those people shirk their responsibility to the fate by hiding behind excuses. Failing to confront with their difficulties and lacking the courage to find out the reasons caused their failure; it is difficult for them to conquer themselves not mention to striving for a bright future.
Admittedly, with the fast development of technology, people in developed countries have more freedom to choice than people in developing country from daily life to mental world. Lacking the fundamental living necessities, the first question those people met is how to survive. Meeting with starve, poverty, and war, it is difficult for those people in the developing country to enjoy the same choice as those people in developed country do. Cherubic children in western country have plenty choices in their daily life such as playing games in the park, enjoying sunshine in the beach, choosing their favorite foods, or learning what they want, at the same time those children in IRAQ met is how to escape from the gun or how to bear the pain of loosing parents and friends. At this point, people’s freedom of choice needs a peaceful, plentiful and democratic circumstance.
From what is discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that we meet more and more choices today. Choice is a part of life. Learning how to make a good choice can lead us to a happiness life. What we also should to concern is that our choice immediately relates to our society and all people in the world need a democratic and peaceful society. |
