4."No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study."
I strongly agree the assertion that significant advances in knowledge require expertise from various fields. The world around us presents a seamless web of physical and anthropogenic forces, which interact in ways that can be understood only in the context of a variety of disciplines.
On the one hand, with the knowledge and experience beyond one's specified studies, he may achieve greater advancement, otherwise, his study may encounter difficulties and even be impeded. We know that Newton has great achievement in the field of physics, he creates the law of action and reaction. But meanwhile, he is good at mathematics, philosophy, and aesthetics. Without these knowledge of other disciplines, he may not create many great theories in physics. Descartes, a French famous philosopher, mathematician, and physicist, besides, he does some researches in the fields of aerography and biology, and he is the initiator of analytic geometry. Because he has so many comprehensive knowledge that he can get great achievements and successes in many fields. Absorbing different knowledge from different fields can improve people's compositive abilities of themselves, it is also possible to make greater success in some fields. So it is benefit for people to study knowledge from different disciplines.
On the other hand, knowledge and experience from outsiders can provide different aspects of thinking, and may lead to inspiration, creation, and new discoveries. People who only have his specified knowledge may limit him to think and solve some problems because these problems may refer to knowledge of other disciplines. For example, an artist can not successfully accomplish a picture of a construction if he is short of the knowledge of geometry which exercise people's imagination of space. Moreover people can get some inspiration or new discoveries from learning the knowledge of other fields. A philosopher may acquire illuminations from physics while a mathematician may find some discoveries from philosophy. Because they can use different aspects of thinking so that it broaden his extension of thinking and make him think problems better. In modern society, people incline to admire some people who have much knowledge of different disciplines, many companies also want to choose such people with these abilities. If a man holds the knowledge of computer, foreign language, and his own specialty, he must be chosen by some good companies and get a content position.
In sum, from what has been discussed above, we may draw the conclusion that no area of intellectual inquiry operates in a vacuum. Because the sciences are inextricably related, to advance our knowledge in any one area we must understand the interplay among them all. |
