167A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.

*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology.

The author hastily claims a conclusion that we should throw away the folk treatment for insomnia, owing to a scientific research for the close connection of this kind of disease and lavender scent which proves the recover of insomnia has something important to do with the scent. But considering about some sufficient information offered by author, this assertion seems unconvincing extremely.

In the first week, all the patients are affected by the scent and the medication, curing lack of sleeping. The ratiocination of the certain method of research is very unjustified due to the fact that people can not distinguish which is the vital condition to ensure patients to fall in sleep, when the interferential factor--particular medication is not excluded from the procedure. Finally, apart from those ratiocination and results, people can not take into account for his or her final week report absolutely, for the ridiculous assertion. Author does not point out that what the experimental conditions of this week take in, neither the comparison of lavender scent and medicine for insomnia, which can effectively justify the function and achievement of this scent. Author wants to use the exceptional case to generalize the summary, addressing the distrustful evidence. As a result of the absence of information of the third week, on the basis of it, we can not ensure the subsequent conclusion.

To strengthen the assertion, even author contends those three week results can provide the convincing evidence, but  the disrupt of medicine is not excluded, and the comparison of the appearance using the lavender scent pillow with the statement of using it before should be pointed out; Otherwise, the claim is also unreasonable. As to the absence of sufficient information, this conclusion is not acceptable.
