156The following is taken from an advertisement placed in a weekly business magazine by the Dickens Academy.

"We distributed a survey to senior management at International Mega-Publishing, Inc. The result of the survey clearly indicates that many employees were well prepared in business knowledge and computer skills, but lacked interpersonal skills to interact gracefully with customers. International Mega-Publishing decided to improve customer satisfaction by sending their newly hired employees to our one-day seminars. Since taking advantage of our program, International Mega-Publishing has seen a sharp increase in sales, an indication that the number of their disgruntled customers has declined significantly. Your company should hire Dickens and let us turn every employee into an ambassador for your company."


The author hastily claims that the company should send their entire employees to engage in the training held by Dickens, to enhance their communication skills with each other, espeacially to customers. But owing to the absence of sufficient information to advocate his or her conclusion, this assertion seems unconvincing to us.

First, author contends that the outstanding achievement of company will be on the surge due to the seminar, in order to support this claim, an example of IMP company provided, but the impact on this company is not justified. He or she does not point out that the sharp increase in sales are all produced by those who have taken the certain training, to substantiate his view. It is extremely possible that one the basis of the efforts by other departments which don not participate this seminar, company can rocket fast in a while, while the complaints from customers are declined too. Thus, resulting in the change of company to the achievement is lack of too logical prove to be accepted.

Even though the improvement all induced by all personnel in company, particularly those clerks having taken courses, we can not contribute the result to the function of the Dickens' effect. There exist several possibilities undermining this assertion such as the fact that these changes are entirely attributed to their personal ability or self-improvement in jobs, leading to the lack of credence of author's unreasonable ratiocination. Moreover, even those training courses can really exert their impacts on IMP attendants, the discrepancies between two different enterprises should be not excluded by officials, which means the same impulse on IMP may not emergent to another company, after considering the necessity of those courses.

Finally, apart from the authenticity of Dickens' seminar and the distinction in various companies, we have to take into account for the statement whether each personnel in this company have to receive the short-period education. We may admit the effect of the seminar on some persons or part of departments, but it is no need that every employee should be good at the certain skill. In some working positions like researching and inventing, communication will decrease their dedicated virtue, resulting in the decrease of company on contrary. Thus no evidence can justify the better change in this company while all clerks participate in this kind of training.

To strengthen this conclusion, author should provide more specific information such as the obvious information that the seminar is boundary with the increase of enterprise, and whether all employees attend it, the improvement is bearing on what they have learnt. As to all the above, this assertion can not be convincing by author's insufficient expatiation.
