The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
------正文------
Some people assert that the way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests, and also reflect social ideas and values. I fundamentally agree with this point view. By observing the appearance and behavior of its people, we could know a society's ideas and values to some extent, but not all.
First of all, human attitudes and interests would be reflected by their appearance and behavior directly or indirectly. In daily life, people will choose certain clothes according to their interests. For example, the football fans intend to wear their favorite football team's shirt; businessmen prefer suits in formal occasions; and movie starts always wear exotic and novel style clothes which could express their personalities. In addition, different behaviors of people indicate varied attitudes to life, too. Extroverts, full of passion, take every possible chance to communicate with others. However, introverts, silent and pessimistic, intend to spend hours themselves. According to these, we could understand people's attitudes and interests by observing their appearance and behavior.
Moreover, different people constitute our society. Because varied people hold various attitudes and interests. These attitudes and interests, which are held by the majority, represent that of the society—ideas and values. As I mentioned before, the appearance and behavior of people reflect their attitudes and interests, in that matter, they also mirror a society's ideas and values to some extent. For instance, Chinese prefer saving money for children's education, parents' health care, etc. But Americans intend to spend money in traveling, exploring, improving quality of life, etc. In one hand, this phenomenon indicates that the Americans lead a better life than Chinese; on the other hand, this also reflects the different social ideas and values: assuming the responsibility and enjoying the life. Additionally, people's appearance and behavior in other part of world also reflects local society's ideas and values. For example, the way Arab women dress indicates Arab society's conservative convention; Japanese who always wear suits reflect their society's preciseness; South American tango mirrors their passionate and unrestrained society's character. In short, we can understand different society by observing the appearance and behavior of its people to some extent.
However, observing the way people look, dress and act would probably fails to provide a whole view of the society, because this kind of observation is often not all-rounded, and in a certain perspective. In other word, what people observed might not typify the majority of the society, and therefore could not reflect the social ideas and values, but only certain group's character, as aptly illustrated by the young's life style. The young love wearing jeans and T-shirt, and always make them special and distinctive. By observing them, we might conclude that our society is fraught with revolutionary and insubordinate spirits. However, it is not the accurate conclusion, because the observation rules out the adults—the majority of the society. Actually, there are still a host of other approaches to access to the social ideas and values. We could rely on them such as studying the culture, art, literature and so forth, when the people's appearance and behavior could not give us an accurate answer.
In sum, I concede that we can tell much about social ideas and values via observing its people's appearance and behavior. Yet under certain situation, we should combine other approach to acquire a more accurate view of society's ideas and values. |
