185"Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

I do not agree with the speaker since scandal could impose much more negative effects on our society than positive influences. Instead, a more effective supervising system is in need.
Admittedly, under some circumstances, scandals could be truly effective in exposing some serious problems hiding beyond our sight in areas like politics or academia, and provides us opportunities to make improvement until not too late. For instances, the collapse of Eron in corporate history is not simply an isolated financial scandal but the corruption of government in accepting Eron’s donations in exchange for support in energy policy. It thoroughly revealed the flaws of the government system. After the Erongate, United States government made comprehensive reforms so as to prevent the same mistake in future. Simply from this perspective, Scandals indeed help self-inspecting.
However, we could not deny that scandals more or less are concerning trivial problems such as private things, as a result of which diverging our attention from the truly important things. In such kind of situation, scandals mainly serve to waste our time, energy and money, which could be used elsewhere in need. The Clintons sexual scandal is an example in point. After the broadcasting, public and even congress turned their eyes to it and spent lots of time to make investigation. As a result, President Clinton was involved into this event and problems that were really important in government whether in economy or international areas were ignored instead. Statistics later showed that the United States' economy greatly went down resulting from this scandal. Thus, scandals focusing on trivial problems are most likely to bring negative effects.
Furthermore, scandals would bring much less positive effects in comparing with negative effects, which sometimes are irreversible, and therefore removes the possibility for coming improvement. This is especially true in academia areas. Consider, a once famous scientist is publicized as having copied some segments from other scientists, leading to his being defied by his colleagues or friends in this area. Such scandals may cause great pressure to the scientist and, to the worst, prevent his later development in academia. I do not mean it is legal for him/her to copy others' works, but that some other more appropriate measures could be adapted to solve this problem, like his colleagues' persuasion in personal correspondence.
Finally, as mentioned above, although the scandals could to some extent lead us to the hidden problems, it is not the most effective way. Like the fact that if we want to control the pollution in a river, the best way is to find the root of source of such pollutants and cut it off. Similarly, to improve the social system, we had better take more effective supervise system to prevent same mistakes to repeat again.
