I fundamentally agree with the speaker that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of enduring value. Meanwhile, critics make their effort to let people apprehend the masterpiece more profoundly and more clearly. Yet, because of the time or the critic own problems, some pieces of art works encounter unfair treatment.

Nowadays, a lot of artists are well-known for their masterpieces, which gives society the lasting values. The famous painting of Picasso, Guernica, which is the representative of cubism, expresses the pain and sorrow of the innocent people who lived in the little town, Guernica, when they suffered the bombing of the autocracy government, Nazi German. This work shows us the cruelty and the distorted spirit of the autocrat. It is the best painting which memorizes the people who died in the autocracy countries and the ones who fought for the freedom and equal rights of all the people. Another work, Eroica, the third symphony of Beethoven’s, which was composed for the hero, Napoleon, in it Beethoven portray a scene where the hero leads his troops fight against the enemy. The work was treated as one of the representatives of his works. Thereby, it is the artist who expresses some lasting value in their works.

On the one hand, the critic who evaluates the works of artists, and gives the proper critique of them, helps the common people understand the meanings of masterpieces of famous artists. As a normal person, without some professional training of aesthetical view, mostly it is hard of them to recognize the merits of such works. Like the representative work of surrealism, Persistence of Memory, which is created by Dali, it expresses a view of dream, and the distorted clocks in it reveal some meanings. Without the critic, these meanings of the picture are hard to comprehend for normal people. Therefore, the critic plays an important role in expressing the value of artists’ works.

On the other hand, the critic is not the artist himself or herself, sometimes the meaning of the work may be explained wrongly, even worse, some masterpieces were treated as rubbish, without the right appreciation, the destiny of artists and their works are in tragedy. The best example is the sorrowful artist, Van Gogh, who only sold one of his paintings in his living days, yet, after his death, his works became some of the dearest masterpieces. His works did not win the favor of critic, and no one was willing to praise his works, and nobody could enjoy the merits of them. That means the critique itself should be carefully evaluated. As mentioned above, sometimes the critique makes negative influence on the artist’s work.

To conclude, the critic could help more to understand the merits of masterpieces, and to some extent the critic may mistake the meaning of them, to this, people should be careful. And the one who creates the lasting value is the artist; they express the spirits and characters of the world, and win the honor of people.

以在下拙见，我们是不是应该多focus一些 lasting这个词呢？
我认为否认评论家的价值是不容易的，但他们是否能给于社会一些长久的价值就很值得讨论。我的论点是那些有长久价值的东西来源于艺术家，评论家对于这些长久的价值基本上是没有贡献的。但我不是很清楚题中society这个词的重要性。
