Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.
------正文------
When it comes to the role of nonmainstream areas of inquiry listed by the speaker, I concede that they play a significant role in satisfying human needs. However, the role they played is far from vital, and they might turn out to be detrimental when we put to much emphasis on it.
To begin with, nonmainstream areas such as astrology, fortune-telling, psychic and paranormal pursuits can meet some human needs. Firstly, they provide a method for human beings to satisfy their curiosity. From the ancient civilization to modern society, humans never cease their interest in predicting the future. Astrology, fortune-telling, whether by measuring the patterns of stars, the interpretation of signs or the communication with supernatural forces, give people unproved information about their personal future such as marriage, health, work, travel and death. Since the mainstream science cannot address all these personal issues, lots of people turn to astrologers or fortune tellers for help. In this way, their psychological needs might be satisfied to some extent. Secondly, nonmainstream areas of inquiry can also give people reassurance and mental relaxation in the fast-changing society. Nowadays, due to the fast pace of living, the quick development of science and technology, the complicate interaction among social members, more and more people feel depressed, tired and suffer from psychological displacement. Under great psychological pressure, many people rely on nonscientific inquiries to relieve themselves. In psychic and paranormal pursuits, people can temporarily draw their minds away from the competitive and tedious reality and feel relaxed. Although these functions of nonmainstream inquiry have been proved false by mainstream sciences, it is the irrational human needs that give them space to exist.
However, the effect of nonmainstream areas of inquiry might be destructive, if we put too much reliance on them. In the first place, overemphasis the role of these areas will impede the development of mainstream science, which is a key factor in maintaining, advancing our modern civilization. Take astrology for instance. Hundreds of years ago, pioneers of modern astronomy such as Galileo, Bruno were persecuted by authorities who believed in astrology and other nonscientific inquires. If there were no such obstacles in the history of science, more discoveries might have been fostered. In the second place, depending too much on nonscientific inquiry in decision making, individual's career will be doomed to fail. Although astrologers or fortune-tellers' suggestions can meet human needs to some extent, these suggestions are actually untrue. If we use false suggestions to guide our practices or activities in the real world, how can we achieve success? In short, giving too much credence on nonmainstream areas of inquiry, not only our society will become backward, but individuals' own future will be destroyed.
In sum, although nonmainstream areas of inquiry play a certain role in our daily life by meeting our psychological needs, if we put too much emphasis on it, the result will turn out to be destructive at both societal and individual levels. |
