The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
'During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college.'

正文:
  The arguer declares that both a raise in salary and a promotion to Department Chairperson should be received by Professor Thomas for her outstanding teaching capability and researching contribution and to prevent her from leaving Elm City University for another college. The argument seems sound and convincing at the first glance, but we would have every reason to be doubted to the assertion when we probe deeper into his process of demonstration and illustration.
   Firstly, the arguer failed to convince us with his major reason of the raise and promotion-- the teaching and researching capability of Professor Thomas. Is the evidence that her class is the largest at the university undoubtedly related to the conclusion that she enjoys a high level of respects and popularity among students? It is possible that her class is so critical and abysmal that few of students dare to be absent in her class, or so universal that most of students in the college have her class in their curriculums. In these cases, the largeness of her class may have little to do with her teaching ability and popularity. It is also unconvincing that the money she brought to the university represents her researching ability. Does she always have a leading influence in research? Or is she always providing profound ideas that contribute to the breakthrough? Without these information can we hardly reach the arguer's conclusion.
   Secondly, even if Professor Thomas is doing an outstanding work in her filed of teaching and researching, is that means that she could be an outstanding Department Chairperson? To be a good Department Chairperson requires a talent of emotional control, and skills and patients in handling complicated human-related problems, which could seldom be showed in the working procedure and fruits of her outstanding work of teaching and research. Further more, too many department works could distract her concentration on teaching and studying, which could undermine the quality of her major works.
    Last but not least, is Professor Thomas complaining about her current salary and status? Or is there any college willing to grab her and doing the exact action already? Possibly she is quite satisfy with her present salary, then is it still necessary for us to offer her a promotion and a raise of money? In addition, the factors she cares about colleges may not be primarily money and status, she may be caring more about the atmosphere of research and the fame of college, which indicates that the better way to prevent her from moving away could be a stronger focus on academic atmosphere and a raise of fame of our university, rather than offering her a higher salary and status.
   In conclusion, further studies and rational analyses are needed before the arguer could sweep all these doubts and reach a convincing conclusion.
