Is it artist rather than critic who gives our society something of lasting value? The speaker believes so. As far as I am concerned, I concede that it is the artists who give both the birth and internal value to art works, but in order to make these works be long-lasting, critics' judgments and interpretation should not be neglected.

Admittedly, we take for granted that the value of arts is created by artists. Fundamentally speaking, artists are the birth mothers of their works, no matter what quality these works have. Artists’ creation forms the basis for further discussion on the value of artistic works. Secondly, accompanying with the birth, the internal value is shaped by artists’ own creativity, emotion, experience, unique perspectives and outlook at the same time. This uniqueness, representing artists own characteristics and styles, serves as a necessary factor in determining artistic value.

However, only uniqueness itself cannot make the artistic works be enduring. Common experience tells us that although numerous fresh art forms or works come into being everyday, few of them can finally stand the test of time. Take novel for instance. Tons of new novels with attractive titles, contents, etc. have being put on shelves in bookstore every month; nonetheless, it is quite usual that after 3 months only a fraction number of them are highly approved by our society. In other words, while every artist's work has his or her uniqueness, uniqueness does not equate with high quality. Thus, lasting value is not warranted.

Additionally, in order to be long-lasting, great works should be distinguished and interpreted properly. And it is critics' responsibility to do that. Without their endeavors, gold would be buried in sands and laypersons will never get the chance to understand these original art works. On the one hand, Art critics are usually experts on certain subjects, say, novel, film, music, painting, sculpture, and sometimes they are artists, too. It is their insightful evaluation, which is deeply rooted from their knowledge, experience, professional training, that let the great works stand out from the ordinary ones. Finally, critics reveal the lasting value of these great works via their interpretations and comments. On the other hand, the artists are most likely good at creating rather than communicating. Their idiosyncratic character makes ordinary people hard to understand their works. Under this circumstance, the critics act as the middleman who expresses artists' ideas in a way that common people can comprehend. If the meaning of artists' work cannot reach the masses, and be understood by them, the value of these works will lose the ground to last.

In the final analysis, it is true that artists give birth to their works; nonetheless, not all of them have the quality and chance to last. If these great works have not been identified and interpreted to the masses by critics, their value will less likely to be long-lasting, or even never come into people's sights. Thus, critics' jobs are indispensable.

Is it artist[冠词] rather than critic[ibid] who gives our society something of lasting value? The speaker believes so. As far as I am concerned, I concede that it is the artists who give both the birth and [internal value good point!]to art works, but in order to make these works be long-lasting, critics' judgments and interpretation should not be neglected.
