Issue17 There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws.


Laws are a set of rules designed to govern society and control our behavior. When it comes to the issues like how  laws are categorized and how should people react to certain laws, I disagree with the speaker that there are only two  types of laws, just and unjust, though I have to concede that everyone in society should obey just laws and resist to unjust laws.

Admittedly, it is reasonable to justify certain laws as just or unjust ones according to its effectiveness in assuring individual freedom and equality. Laws against robbery and theft, for instance, are self-evidently just laws, since these laws protect the private property owned by individuals, which should be under their own possession and disposal. However, this is not to say that only just law s and unjust laws exist in our society. Many laws set and enacted in our social system, are not oriented toward individual behavior but our social policies. The contemporary and pervasive manifestations of such laws are ones pointed at people's injuries during the work, and students’ loan and subsidies for education that otherwise they cannot afford. Form neither the angle of individual interests nor the equality of membership in society, two laws listed above could be hard to define as just or unjust. They are laws to benefit groups of people, thus promoting the societal development as a whole.

If we turn our attention back to just laws, to obey such law is of crucial significance to the social stability. By regulating the behavior of every one of us, just laws contribute a lot to maintain social orders. For example, there are laws requiring people should use different sides of the road if they go to different directions. What is obvious is that these laws grantee the safety and efficiency of road users. Property and contract laws, as another example, settle down the financial disputes in a just way, meanwhile preventing ones with power to take unfair advantages of the weaker. To be sure, every individual in our society should obey just laws, for they have reinforced social stability, and have offered us a fair environment for our daily activities.

While it is consequential for us to obey just laws, we should not lose sight of the fact that equally important is to resist unjust laws. Whether just or unjust, laws are the products of our humans. “Good” laws when they are initially established, they may fail to perform expected functions and become unjust laws as time goes by. After all, any law is human-oriented. When the living standard, value system, thinking style of the populace vary with time, once just laws need to be changed to better serve the dynamic public. When confronted with unjust laws, people should resist and further modify them. Whatever else might be said, most people would agree that laws are merely our tools to achieve social harmony, to which we should not be the slaves by blindly obeying unjust laws.

In conclusion, it is too hasty for the speaker to divide laws into just and unjust ones. While much emphasis is placed upon obeying just laws, to resist unjust laws carries no less importance, for laws, established by humans, are never of something with perpetual justice.
