题目:ISSUE 120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."

Dose the past provide little guidance for our living today, for the current situation is new and complex? The speaker believes so. However, as far as I am concerned, although I confess that the statement has merits in some cases, it is too hasty to conclude that history has little guidance to offer.

Admittedly, with the unprecedented pace of development of our present society, what we confront today is quite different from the past, which has no direct solution to offer. Nowadays, we have created lots of inventions that our ancestors could never imagine: the instant communication equipments, the effective traffic tools, the adorable entertainment facilities, etc. While enjoying convenience brought by these innovations, we are also suffering from critical issues that never bothered our predecessors: the threat of nuclear war, the negative outcomes of globalization, the ever-increasing internet crime, and the ethical conflicts resulted from genetic engineering technology and so forth. Facing these pressing problems, it might be understandable to address that history could not provide us with ready answers and direct experience which is helpful to solve them.

However, although history contains no ready solutions for our modern problems mentioned above, it does not follow that history has little value to guide our lives.

On the one hand, history can provide us with abundant background information which is crucial to understand hot-centered issues at present. A case in point is the recent debate over Japan's proposal of becoming a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council. Some westerners might not understand why so many Asian countries fiercely oppose this proposal. Whereas if they turn to the history of World War Two at the Asian region, and recognize what Japanese army forces have done to its neighbors, the reaction of these Asian countries such as China, Korea, etc., would be reasonable. In other words, history provides priceless information that help us understand present issues properly, thus guide us to correct decisions.

On the other hand, anther advantage of history is that it prevents us from falling into the same pit again. Take the national development strategy of current developing countries for instance. At present, for the sake of economic growth and social advancement, it would be unwise for these developing countries taking the former routes of the developed ones. History tells us that the wealth of the developed countries is primarily based upon modern industries, which consistently pursues high productivity at the cost of large consumption of finite natural resources and severe pollution of the environment. If developing countries with the largest population on earth like China and India follow this road again, the future of the entire human race would be hard to imagine indeed. Knowing this potential tragedy, national policy makers from developing countries begin to find new routes which can provide the greatest benefit with the lowest level of damage.
In the final analysis, I concede that history offers little guidance to new issues resulted from modern science and technology, nonetheless, it has merits in respects such as providing necessary information to understand certain issues and teaching us lessons to avoid the same mistake. Thus, the speaker's assertion is too extreme and truly irrational.

However, although history contains no ready solutions for our modern problems mentioned above, it does not follow that history has little value to guide our lives.

On the one hand, history can provide us with abundant background information which is crucial to understand hot-centered/ 这个词是不存在的,可以改用hot issues at present.

If developing countries with the largest population on earth like China and India follow this road again, the future of the entire human race would be hard to imagine indeed. Knowing this potential tragedy/ Bearing this potential tragedy in mind, national policy makers from developing countries should加一个词感觉好很多 begin to find new routes which can provide the greatest benefit with the lowest level of damage.
