38.The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.

"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

Is the author’s assertion that the daily use of Ichthaid is a good way to prevent cold and lower absenteeism reasonable or suspicious? In-depth scrutiny reveals that hastiness seriously undermines the credibility of the argument and the author’s logic suffers from several fallacies as follows.

Primarily, the author offers no evidence to substantiate the assumption that colds are the reasons most frequently given for absence from school and work, I have enough reasons to doubt that the real reasons for the absence may lie in other aspects. Perhaps, most of the people who do not feel well mistake their discomfort for cold. Or perhaps, cold is the most common and efficient excuse for the leave, even though the absentee do not catch cold in fact. Therefore, the assumption, which the argument greatly depends on, is far from convincing to support the author’s idea.

Even grant the credibility of the assumption, the author unfairly equals the simultaneity of high fish consumption and lower frequency of visiting doctors for treatment of cold to causality. It is quite possible that most of people in East Meria have basic medical knowledge and they are able to treat unserious illness such as cold. Thus, they do not need to turn to doctors for treatment. The author also fails to rule out the possibility that it is the better living habits that endows the residents in East Meria better healthy. Under these circumstances, the lower frequency of treatment of cold lends little support to strengthen the point that eating fish can help to prevent cold.

In addition, concessively accepting all aspects above, whether Ichthaid, derived from fish oil, is a good way to prevent cold is still open to doubt. As the author does not mention some scientific researching result of the function of fish in preventing cold, it is much suspicious that other components of fish, such as blood, bone, etc, rather than fish oil help to kill cold, or this kind of fish oil is harmful to human’s health on the contrary. To this extent, daily use of Ichthaid might possibly cause more healthy problems, let alone prevent cold and lower the absenteeism.

To sum up, based on some groundless analysis and evidence, the argument is replete with defects. To better develop the argument, the author should add some detailed information about: (1)absenteeism is largely due to cold; (2)there is definite causality between consumption of fish and frequency of cold;(3)the functioning element to prevent cold is contained in fish oil which Ichthaid is derived from.

小拍一下!

Or perhaps, cold is the most common and efficient excuse for the leave, even though the absentee do not catch (a)cold in fact. Therefore, the assumption, which the argument greatly depends on, is far from convincing to support the author’s idea.

Even grant the credibility of the assumption, the author unfairly equals the simultaneity of high fish consumption and lower frequency of visiting doctors for treatment of cold to causality. It is quite possible that most of people in East Meria have basic medical knowledge and they are able to treat unserious illness such as cold (themselves). Thus, they do not need to turn to doctors for treatment. The author also fails to rule out the possibility that it is the better living habits that endows the residents in East Meria better healthy(health?).

(是否应该强调Ichthaid,而非fish oil?)

Primarily(这个词比较好,新,少人用), the author offers no evidence to substantiate the assumption that colds are the reasons most frequently given for absence from school and work, I have enough reasons to doubt that the real reasons for the absence may lie in other aspects. Perhaps, most of the people who do not feel well mistake their discomfort for cold.(可能引起缺席的是头疼独资腾之类的,这样好像比较普遍哦) Or perhaps, cold is the most common and efficient excuse for the leave, even though the absentee do not catch cold in fact. Therefore, the assumption, which the argument greatly depends on, is far from convincing to support the author’s idea.

Even grant the credibility of the assumption, the author unfairly equals the simultaneity of high fish consumption and lower frequency of visiting doctors for treatment of cold to causality(发现楼主的TS语句都特好,新东方老师说这样很好骗分数的). It is quite possible that most of people in East Meria have basic medical knowledge and they are able to treat unserious illness such as cold. Thus, they do not need to turn to doctors for treatment. (这里最好总结一下, low rate of visiting doctors dose not guarantee the health of people in East Meria)The author also fails to rule out the possibility that it is the better living habits that endows the residents in East Meria better healthy. Under these circumstances, the lower frequency of treatment of cold lends little support to strengthen the point that eating fish can help to prevent cold.

In addition, concessively accepting all aspects above, whether Ichthaid, derived from fish oil, is a good way to prevent cold is still open to doubt. As the author does not mention some scientific researching result of the function of fish in preventing cold, it is much suspicious that other components of fish, such as blood, bone,(fish meat 比较合适把,没人吃骨头啊) etc, rather than fish oil help to kill cold, or this kind of fish oil is harmful to human’s health on the contrary.
