ARGUMENT 145
A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person-often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed-and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.

Outline:
This argument begins to quote the data collected by a new study that shows people who snore are more likely to gain weight than others who do not snore. And then the argument points out a well known notion that many people who snore stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, which will wake the person and thus cause exhausted during the day. As it stands, the author comes to a conclusion that anyone who snores should try to eat less and do more exercise. The author's deduction about this argument seems to be logical at the first glance; however, if we make a careful examination on it, several flaws will be exposed conspicuously.

First of all, in evaluating the data collected by the new study there is two main flaws. For one thing, the author provides no evidence that it is certainly the snore that causes one's gaining weight rather than the person who is fat are prone to snore. Without ruling out this alternative, the causal relationship established by the author could not convince me at all. For another thing, even assuming that the data do demonstrate that snore must be the reason for people's putting on weight, we are, nevertheless skeptical about the way in which the study was hold and the data was obtained. It is entirely possible that the new study was only confined in a small range where people who snore are just the people who are fat. Lacking this information about the data and study, we have good reasons to doubt the representativeness of the study.

In addition, the argument claims that breathing stop at night which causes people who snore to wake would at length lead to tiresome and less exercise. It seems to be reasonable, however the author neglect other possible alternatives that may also cause tiresome in the day. These alternatives may embrace the physical condition of a person, the inclination for exercise, etc. It is possible that the people who feel too tired to exercise have bad physical condition all the time and always get sick and that they may even dislike exercising by nature rather than result from the night wake. Hence, this point also can not convince me of the relationship between the snore and gaining weight.

Finally, the author concludes that people who snore should eat less and do more exercise; however, the author provides no evidence that eat less than the average person and to exercise more would be beneficial for the people to eliminate one's snore. Our experience tells us that one who eat less and do more exercise would easily get tired and even sick, which may be followed by an even worse quality of sleeping. In that case, people would be trapped into a circle which may in turn increase the possibility of their snoring at night.

To sum up, the argument is substantially weaken by several problematic assumptions. To improve it, the author should provide clear information about the study and data. The author is required to establish reasonable relationship among snore, eat and exercise and rule out other possible alternatives; otherwise, the argument would be logically unfounded.
