103 "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
Summary
1. history beyond our daily lives
2. learn from history, do not repeat mistakes
3. furthermore, lift our spirit, understand our present society
History, the aggregate of past events, is beyond our daily lives, reaching far into a variety of aspects in our society. The speaker unfairly limits history to what is relevant to our daily lives. On the contrary, the study of history will provide much more valuable information in other areas, and from history we can gain much knowledge concerning our careers, get inspiration for our aims, learn to deal with our emotion in the face of adversity and even have a sense of forcast.
As a collective memory and a storehouse of experience, history presents us much more beyond daily life activities. Like Military, sociology and polity, those are far from our daily lives but the major parts of history. Studying the past event and culture based on written words, people will base their work on what has been done by the past persons and need not to repeat the same work or researches. There is a famous book on military in China, "the art of war" written by Sun Tzu, in which detailed and instructive military technologies are introduced. People, especially those military commanders, sucking as much ideas from the book as they can, can certainly improve their thoughts and minds. What is more, history put much emphasis on the change of societies and also analyses the corresponding causes. By studying this part of history people learn how to better our society and construct a peaceful and powerful nation.
To be more specific, studying history will teach people not to repeat the same mistakes and provide the right ideas to the current human beings. As Francis Bacon said, "Histories make men wise." For instance, history can teach the leading party not to address the inappropriate policies in a country. Any attempts to suppress savagely or cheat on the people, who are the basis of a nation, will be badly struck back and eventually lead to the collapse of the leading party. Fortunately, most parties in the world have learned this criteria and act well in listening to their people to comply with them to certain degree. So one of the values of studying history beyond its effect on our daily lives is that government officials and politicians can learn from history to avoid the same mistake that ancient leaders once committed, and then lead the country into a more democratic society.
Furthermore, studying history can make our mind sharp, let us have a deep insight of nowaday society, and even enable us to predict the future. History is a detailed record of what has been done from the ancient time to the present, which is certainly packed with myriads of material guidances and work as a mirror. When people encounter something they are not familiar with, they might turn into get help from others' experience in a similar circumstance for people are said to be good at learning from experience. Studying history give us a chance to experience many particular cases and make our thoughts deeper. In China, there is an old saying which says "Learning from history will let you know what will occur in the future". In other words, by studying history people will contemplate problems from all sides and have a foresight of the coming days.
On balance, history means a source of precedent and prediction whose effects cover much more than that relevant to our daily lives. By means of studying history people will be smart not to commit the same mistake as past people did, and make us be able to ponder over problems profoundly and have a forethought. |
