Argument2 The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on
landscaping and housepainting."

翻译:七年前,附近的Brookville社区的业主实施了一系列关于该社区的庭院应如何布置以及房屋应涂何种颜色的规定。从那以后,Brookville的地产平均价格翻了三番。为使Deerhaven Acres的地产升值,我们也应该对于景观和房屋涂色实施自己的规定。

In this argument, the committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres suggests that homeowners in this community should adopt their own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting in order to raise property values because Brookville has tripled average property values by adopting the restrictions. The suggestion seems reasonable, but after careful examination, we can point out several flaws as follows.

First of all, there is no evidence to support the claim that the raise of Deerhaven Acres's average property values is caused by the restrictions. Also it is hard to convince homeowners that only these restrictions can result in triple of the property values according to the common sense. It is possible that boiling inflation has occurred in this country during the past seven years, thus the dramatic raise of property values is not surprising. It is equally possible that new subway has been built just beside Brookville community, as a result, the traffic around Brookville are much more convenient and it is natural of the raise. Moreover, it is also likely that the developer of Brookville buildings improved the building structure and made the building more comfortable and satisfying the homeowners' demands.

In addition, since Brookville adopted the restrictions, seven years has past. Granted that the method was really feasible at that time, it is not affirmative now. People's taste changed along with the time, especially recently, fashion is inconstant. Even if people paid much attention on the appearance of building, now people possibly advert the practicability mainly. So it needs to be examined carefully.

Finally, just copy won't do. The homeowners in Deerhaven Acres should study the idea of Brookville, that is, to content the custom's requirement is the essence and the best way to raise the property values. To perform this, they should conduct widely surveys among potential customs, and find out what they really need. For example, if the result of survey is that people still think about the appearance first, then the restrictions suggested by the committee is reasonable. On the contrary, if people refer to the environment around above all, then the committee should try to improve the environment instead.

In sum up, the committee is too fast to get the conclusion. To make it more convincing, the facets discussed above should be taken into account.
