Does the study of history have value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily life? I agree with this assertion insofar as the study of history is important to our daily life. However, I believe the purpose of studying history is that it provides thoughts and approaches for explaining and understanding, encouragement and examples for adversity and ordinary people, avoiding historical mistakes, perspectives for future--all of which help us decide how to live our lives.

Firstly, studying history provides thoughts and approaches for explaining and understanding some sophisticate problems. Take a phenomenon such as a nation's thriving and prosperous. A purely contemporary analysis may shed some light on the phenomenon, but a historical assessment is clearly fundamental. What was the situation of the nation in the past? When did the nation thrive? Once we determine those two questions as to the nation, we can try to analysis and comprehend the phenomenon of the nation's thriving and prosperous.

Secondly, history also provides encouragements and examples for adversity and ordinary people. "History teaching by example" is one phase that describes this use of a study of the past--a study not only enumerates achievements of great people, successful men and women, but also tells the process how ordinary people become successful people and how they get over the difficulties. Such as studying the stories of individuals who struggled in difficult situations in the past allows a person regain courage in difficult settings.

Thirdly, a study of history is essential for avoiding repeat mistakes of the past. As Francis Bacon said, "Histories make men wise." History can tell us the inappropriateness of dealing with some situations. For example, in the past, in China, educators put emphasis on indoctrinate knowledge to students, and the students seem acquire knowledge well for the reason that all students got high scores in the examination. However, later on they found that students have little creativity. Then education in China has progress now and avoid same situation.

Finally, studying history not only synthesis the problems and phenomenon of past, present, but also prospect the future of our lives. To analysis and synthesis the rules of the history helps to predict the future. Sometimes what happened in the past will happen in the future. We utilize the prediction of the future to contrive the future.(这段怎么展开写呀？)

In sum, studying history is vital to our daily life, but more important, to study history is to gain the capability--analysis and synthesis experiences in the past, understand how recent, current, and prospective changes and what cause the human behavior--to create a more beautiful live.
