题目
Issue218 In order for any work of art-whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song-to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.

According to what Freud has said, art, in essence, is a kind of release of individual lust, converting the human libido into plentiful creativity. It is through the work of art that artists express their passions, emotions, and desires. From this we can see, art is therefore, first and foremost, concerning with the inner world rather than with the outside one as a whole.

What kind of art has merit? Is it the art that can be understandable to most people? The speaker thinks it is. But in my opinion of view, I think any work of art, whether it is film, literature, sculpture, or a song, as long as it can bring esthetical enjoyment to audiences, it is a valuable artwork, even if it cannot be understood by most people.

First of all, the value of a piece of artwork has little relation to whether most people can understand, on the contrary, so far as it is the expression of author's true feelings, passions, emotions, or desires, it has merit. As is known to everyone, in the ancient society, artists were always controlled by the gerentocratic and they were only the tools of the governors to enforce their management. Consequently, there were few arts coming down as best-known works. However, the case is totally different in the modern society. Now artists can express their opinions freely in their works and the artistic industry is flourishing unprecedentedly.

Secondly, if an artwork does not stick to the author's true feeling and only tries to cater to audiences or make them to understand the work, it cannot have long value. For example, in recent years, there are lots of tiresome commercial films, which have little meanings and only aim to make people laugh or kill time.  Although these films are popular among people and can be understood by most people, they are not appreciated by critics or experts. Moreover, these films will be forgotten soon.

Last but not the least, artworks need not to be understood by most people because people's knowledge is limited and not everyone is psychologist, thus it is impossible for everyone to guess completely the true thinking of the authors, whereas only to enjoy the artworks is enough. Take music as an example. When we listen to a piece of beautiful music, we can receive the great entertainment or make our heart stroked, thus the music is of great value. We do not need to learn how about the mood of the author when he created the work and etc.

To sum up, it is not necessary for any artist to try to make his work be understandable by most people; nevertheless, just to express himself freely and truly is enough for making a valuable and well-known art.
