The speaker thinks that the beginner is superior to the expert in making important discoveries, but in my point of view, I feel it is hard to conclude who is more likely since both the beginner and the expert have advantages and disadvantages. So if they learn from other's strong points to offset one's weakness, it is most likely to make discoveries.

On the one hand, the beginner has merits and shortcomings. They always have strong passions and the spirit of never giving up, and they have no misgivings and are not afraid of failing, so they can try their best to overcome any difficulty they meet during the process of inquiry. In addition, they always can bring fresh thinking and advanced knowledge into the study, which are very important to any field of inquiry. There are lots of examples that the beginner makes very important discoveries. For instance, when Apple and IBM were scrambling drastically the hardware market, young Bill Gates found the huge potential software market and created the Microsoft, finally received great success. Nevertheless, most beginners do not have experiences, so it is common that they have to suffer many failures before success.

On the other hand, the expert also has advantages as well as disadvantages. Compared with the beginner, they always have abundant experiences, so they can estimate exactly which way is the shortcut during study in most occasions. Sometimes, the experiences are very important, such as medicine. For example, when a patient is sent to hospital and the situation is very serious, then it is no time left to the beginner to find the pathogeny and give out treatment plan, while it need the expert to judge the state and prescribe as soon as possible.  However, we have to admit that the experts are often blocked by fame and gain, which consequently influence their study work. Most of the experts have to leave some time to deal with the trifles, such as the interviews, the salary, the health of themselves and their families, and even their children's grade. With so many disturbances, they can hardly concentrate on the study and try their bests. Moreover, they nearly do not have time and energy to learn new knowledge and technologies. Take Einstein as an example, he ever said that after he found the Relativity Theory, he could hardly find a quiet and peaceful place to have a profound thinking or make decision based on his own will rather than that of public.

To sum up, the beginner and the expert both have possibility to make important discoveries. As for they both have advantages and disadvantages, they should work together and learn from each other, which is also the current trend of study.

但是觉得BILL GATES 的例子似乎有点不大恰当,因为题目说的是 FIELD OF INQUIRY 是指学术研究, 但是这个是个商业的案例吧,不算是DISCOVERY
