I partly agree with the speaker's opinion, that is, rituals and ceremonies do help define a culture, however, without them, societies or groups of people will not have a diminished sense of who they are since there are many facets to define a culture and some rituals or ceremonies do need to be replaced.

First of all, when defining a culture, rituals and ceremonies are very helpful. By observing the rituals and ceremonies of a society or a group, we can learn much about the culture of the society or group. For example, China has Spring Festival as traditional feast, while America has Christmas as an important feast. This can show one of the differences of China culture and America culture. Furthermore, many groups, such as companies, establish some special rituals and ceremonies to define their own cultures. For instance, in the recent years, many hotels' managers demand their employees to collect in the halls of hotels every morning and assign task or instruct the employees. By doing like that, on the one hand, it can inspirit the employees; on the other hand, it can exhibit good character of the hotels to the customers.

However, rituals and ceremonies are not the only facets used to define a culture. In fact, there are many other facets, such as appearance, language, art, and the like. Take appearance as an example. When study the appearance of different societies, great differences of their cultures can be found. American prefers to dress jeans, which show they like freedom and release. But several years ago, Chinese always dressed formally and the common clothes, which told that people at that period were very conservative and dared not to innovate. Besides appearance, language and art can also tell much about a culture and are very vital to define a culture. In fact, all the above facets together built a culture.

In addition, some rituals and ceremonies are so unreasonable that need to be abolished or replaced. They are always the productions of old societies and very unfashionable to adapt the new societies. In the ancient China, there were lots of crucial or rigorous rules to demand people. For example, children should kneel down before their parents. If their parents were died, they should place many luxuries in the coffins. In some areas, the children were even demanded not to espouse for 3 years since their parents died. Admittedly, such rules are not reasonable, so to abolish them even means great improvement of the societies.

To sum up, rituals and ceremonies is helpful to define a culture, but not the only facets. Without them, we can also define or distinguish a culture and societies or groups of people can still know who they are.

First of all, when defining a culture, rituals and ceremonies are very helpful.helpful for what? understand a culture?or others? please make it concrete！  By observing the rituals and ceremonies of a society or a group, we can learn much about the culture of the society or group.这句和前句结合起来简化成一句即你这段的TS   For example, China has Spring Festival as traditional feast, while America has Christmas as an important feast.
