Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a interdisciplinary subject, it mainly exists in Computer Science and its lingusitics counterpart is named computational Linguistics (CL).

In fact, at most circumstances, NLP and CL are the same.

Not really the same, I once read this from the web, however I don't remember where it came from.

"Computational Linguistics (CL) should be thought of as linguistics carried out through computers or computational algorithms. As a subdiscipline of linguistics, it uses scientific methodology to study natural language. CL relies heavily on mathematics, especially logic and statistics.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a field devoted to studying and solving problems related to manipulating linguistic objects (e.g., words, phrases, dialogs). NLP relies heavily on engineering principles, as it attempts to solve problems such as how to get convert sound waves to written text (Speech Recognition), how to convert natural language expressions into a form that a machine can 'understand' (Natural Language Understanding), how to convert data stored in a computer into appropriate linguistic expressions (Natural Language Generation), and how to convert such expressions into sound waves (Speech Synthesis). "
